No one is more volatile than a football player with a chip on his shoulder. Naka took last year pretty hard but considering he's still on the team, it seems like they are willing to give him a second chance. He can either put last year behind him and improve immensely or let it eat at him and lose his final opportunity.

Dude the numbers game is working against him. When Godfrey was moved to FS and they signed DJ Moore and Captain back it was over for him.. He almost has to be perfect to keep a roster spot.

 

Right now he could be deeply down on the depth chart.

oh, I agree it's a longshot. But he still signed with the team once again (albeit, with a paycut) despite the horrendous season and multiple blunders. He easily could have been cut after the first Falcons game.

 

Naka hasn't made any noise in OTAs and Mini Camp which doesn't support his chances, but those are done in shorts and T-shirt. He's still on the team at this point and anything can happen in TC. His chances are low, yes, but the odds are better than what they probably should've been.

Godfrey is the best safety in the league and will be a pro-bowler. Say hello to the new Ed Reed. Anything less than 19-0 from the Panthers this year would be a huge upset. 

 

Is that better? Or can I stay in reality and let you enjoy your fairytale world? Godfrey is an average player- there's nothing wrong with that and that hardly makes me a pessimist.

Nakamura backs up Godfrey although maybe he gets cut.

I think Lester could actually back up Godfrey. I seem to remember reading that Lester's best year in college was when was playing FS. He was switched to SS after Barron left

Heres how I see things unfolding...

WR-

Final 2 spots go to Gettis (6'3, sub 4.4 speed) showed flashes in his only season most potentila out of any bubble players at WR. Finally I think Pilares will be the 6th WR he IMO has shown much more promise as an actual reciever. With Ginn and Barner on the roster that negates any special teams value Edwards, and Adams would've had. Not to mention the new obsession with size, two 5'11 receivers with limited skill likely won't carry much weight when it comes to avoiding being cut.

TE-I think Rosario has a chance to be our surprise player on offense, with TE size, and the route running capabilities/athleticism of a receiver he could present a lot of match up issues for LB's and S's. Although Harstock remains as our 2nd to begin the season.

RG-I agree with the masses, we'll bring Kugbila along slowy as we finally have an offensive line thats all healthy and has chemistry to a degree. Piggy stays on after being passed by Kug due to his ability to back up Kalil.

DB- Thomas, Norman, Capt, Dockery, and Florence are my final 5, Moore was signed when we thought Capt was gone who later resigned. We don't need two 5'9 or less DB's (see size obsession). White to Ps.

S-I see Mitchell, Campbell, and Lester behind Godfrey as Naka and Jones are both cut late.

Lester is a much better "in the box" safety. His hips a stiff and his struggles come in coverage. Thats why he translates better to SS. I think DJ. Moore backs up Godrey at FS.

Naka doesn't make the team unless injuries destroy the Safety position. Moore will be the back-up at FS and if Lester can play special teams. Colin and Naka could be gone. They are only keeping 9 players in the secondary. And the numbers don't work out well for Naka.

Naka may make the team as a special teams player. He still has good value there.

Only problem I see is that there's 3 SS and one FS. There's no backup to Charles.

Didn't Godfrey start out his rookie year as a FS when Chris Harris was here at SS?? 

As for why he struggled as a SS and a FS in cover 2 zone which we have played alot is because our run defense was so poor the safeties had to play the run first and pass second.  That means you are susceptible to play action and too often bite on the fake while your man floats by.  The front 7 playing well against the run means we can play more man to man in the secondary and they can concentrate on defending the pass not the run. Teams use zone when they want defenders looking in the backfield to defend the run versus man to man where defenders watch their man primarily which allows the run to flourish if your defensive 7 can't stop it.

 

A better run defense will make the whole secondary more effective.
