More piling on Rivera--Prisco ranks the coaches

I think one issue that could be fixed this year was how long it takes to get the plays in and called in the huddle.  Every snap it appeared Cam was struggling to get it off in time.  With Chud gone and the offense streamlined, our offense should appear more organized. One of the worst examples of poor coaching is bad time management, which the Panthers were practically known for over the last 2 seasons

Let's just hope, if/when Rivera gets an early lead, he won't call off the dogs; usually allowing the opposition to "come back from behind", when the Panthers looked to win in a walk.

I was listening to pat Kirin who was a former GM and is now with nfl Sirius. He thinks Rivera is getting too much criticism for what has happened. He praised him for how he has handled Cam letting him start right away. He also thinks moving Shula up and going for consistency is huge especially for the offense and Newton. He thinks if we have to start over in 2014 it will set the team back quite a bit. He said we need to let him develop. He blames Richardson for going cheap by hiring a coordinator with no experience. He said we would likely replace Rivera with another coordinator and have to go through the same process. If you want a great coach then pay top dollar for a proven guy like a Bill Cowher. Otherwise you get what you pay for and you have to be patient. I think that is spot on

I think the Problem was: You had a head coach, and two coordinators with very little experience, coupled with an impostor GM. Therefore, Rivera had no one to lean on/learn from.

It can certainly be argued, that either Rivera, or previous the GM (who shall name nameless), should have been smart or humble enough to know that an experienced assistant or coordinator would have been best for the clueless Rivera.

As Rivera has admitted he made mistakes. I think a coach is both a game manager and teacher. As a game manager he has to improve but as a teacher and one who develops talent I am actually quite impressed with him.

I think if the Panthers would have brought in an experienced OC when they hired him we may not be having this discussion.

Coach Rivera absolutely has the pedigree to become a successful head coach in the NFL in my opinion. I think the players like him and he really does seem to be becoming a better coach.

With that said I absolutely agree that with him it should be playoffs(or a 10 win season) or bust. We've shown we can hang with the big boys. I can't put the Seattle game on him but a lot of our close losses could have been wins with better coaching. The same way I expect Cam to have a big step up in development this year is how I feel about Rivera as a head coach.

I hope Panther Nation is ready to keep any of these haters and ESPN from jumping on the bandwagon when Cam takes over the league. You wanted a villian? You got one. The entire Panther Nation.

Ron Rivera is arguably the best defensive coach in the entire NFL. Entering year three he has our defense in position to be dominant, just like his third year everywhere else he has coached. With two years experience as a HC he can now adjust and learn from his mistakes with game management and play calling.

Cam Newton is also entering his third season and I expect him to dominate and show a more complete, consistent package. Our team is healthy for the first time under Rivera. Getting a healthy Beason and Kalil is like adding two FA who are All-Pro and in their prime. What other team added that this offseason? Not to mention Star was the steal of the draft and has the makings of an All-Pro DT.

And personally I am really rooting for Ron to succeed here. He is very genuine and seems to be a man of exceptional character. Most people around here have some sort of witch hunt going on and want him fired. I hope he is the HC in Carolina for 20+ years because it means we have a stadium full of Lombardi trophies and an all-time great HC/QB.

lol this post is full of so much poo...

No coach has a 100% healthy team all the time, also Rivera has had Beason and Kalil on the field while coaching as well as most the starters.

As Mad Hatter stated, this is accurate... this is something Rivera needs to prove wrong because as of now it's right. Rivera has sucked, and no it doesn't take half a decade for a coach to learn and start winning.

What is with you guys spewing this poo year after year until finally said person is fired and you all want to hype up the next guy before he sets foot  the building.

Rivera shouldn't even be here, new GM, one year contracts, promoting a poo OC...don't be stupid, these are all signs that this article is true and that the people that matter know that.

Much of the criticism Rivera has taken has been amplified because we lost so many close games.  If Nakamura knocks down the pass, if Newton doesn't fumble the ball after getting the first down against Atlanta, Newton makes the throw against Seattle, and so on, we end up 10-6 and most of the criticism goes away.  How many other coaches make mistakes every game but as long as they win, it is all forgiven.  This isn't an apologist post or trying to blame the players because we win as a team and lose as a team including players and coaches and the GM.

Rivera has  made  mistakes for sure especially in game management.  He would admit this  I suspect.  But what he doesn't get credit for is how  he has handled Newton, how he has built a staff who is very good at teaching players and building talent. and how he has motivated the players despite the losing and injuries that have marred his 2 years.

I don't know if he is 25th, 20th or whatever on the list.  What I do know is that he is under a microscope whether that is fair or not.  He does have to win this year or be gone.  I hope  he does win and we keep him. I think that teams are often too willing just to dump guys before they give him a great chance to win especially when they see the success of a guy like Harbaugh in San Francisco.  What they forget is that San Fran for example had a lot more talent than we had when they both started and that Harbaugh had experience as a head coach.  Should we have picked him instead of Rivera?  I don't know if he would have come here at any salary.  He seemed committed to the west coast both as a destination and philosophy.

Hopefully we win this year and Rivera puts all this talk to bed this year. It would be good for the Panthers, the fans and Rivera himself to have consistency.  As long as it isn't consistent losing.

Other than what's been mentioned so far, not much more to be said.

We'll see this year.  I'm not a fan of him or our coaching staff in general but support him 110%

If he proves us wrong this year and makes big strides that'll be nice.  We know he can coach up a defense and has an eye for talent...I want results.

Our coaching has cost us more games than any one player during his tenure so far.

If Ron can get this team to the playoffs this year, you hold on to him for 2014 and see if he can string together back -to-back playoff seasons before extending him. If not, he can coordinate defense in Oakland for all I care.

This is the NFL in 2013. No coach deserves five years to figure out how to win.

I have to disagree with this.  An absurdly high percentage of top coaches are top coaches in their first gig, Cowher included.  And an absurdly high percentage of top coaches win right away.  We're all actually hoping that Rivera is the exception, because if he follows the rule, he'll lose again and we will end up starting over again next year.
