7/30 camp thread

If Mitchell can some how magically become a Chris Harris type player I would be very happy.

Dude is Stupid fast/athletic just never got it all together in OAK.

Never getting it together and being put behind Tyvon Branch who is off the charts athletically and a borderline elite safety is two different things.

Oakland liked Mitchell just no money to pay him and that they just extended Branch.

In other words..I agree with you and thought this was a great signing from the beginning...nice to see him follow through so far.

I was out of line and should not have made the abortion comment....for that I apologize.

However, your initial post calling me out about using homer and excuse in the same thread was absolutely a shot across my brow and was an intentional barb.....so, don't play all innocent now.

But abortions are hilarious. I got a good laugh out of it

Harris was good for a short while but Mitchell has the talent to be better than him. Chris Harris never had Mitchell's speed or athletic ability. But damn could he lay the wood.

Let's let Mitchell prove himself first before saying he has the talent to be "better" than Harris. Thats kinda insane at his point.

Well I think it's okay to guess that he won't be the liability in coverage that Harris was. Chris was becoming a weakness just before we let him go. Not to say that Mitchell will be the play maker Harris was, that is yet to be proven no doubt.

Forget Chris Harris.. if he could be like Marlon McCree I would be estatic.

I totally agree. Chris was well below average in athleticism. He was just a smart, physical presence in the box. Coverage was always his weakness and forced Gamble to play off coverage.

Being behind a borderline star safety in Branch might have been a blessing for us. Huff is damn solid as well.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
