You could just have it say "would have.". We don't need to tear people down by changing it to something like "I'm 40 and have the grammar of a 4th grader" even if we're all thinking it. Maybe it'll even be a little confidence boost. They'll be confused for a second why they said such an odd combination of words as "would have," but then they'll nod proudly when they think they must have figured it out.
