Interesting tidbit on Beason's restructure...FA at end of the Season?

I don't know if a player voids a contract if it is the same as if we cut him after the season is over. We clearly wouldn't be on the hook for his salary but his signing bonus bonus could accelerate and we would still have that as a cap hit. I am sure others know more than I do.

It does accelerate. He'd have eight mil in dead money but since he had a 10.5 mil cap hit, we save the 2.5 mil in cap space. I am not fond of only saving 2.5 mil for a recovered beason. I wanted to wait until 2015, when we would save 7.5 mil.

in a rob ryan 34? lol

From what Ive read Ryan likes what he sees in Vilma playing his defense and if Vilma canplay it ,I know Beason could as well - the two of them would make a hell of a middle for no if they could stay healthy.

he'd be undersized at all 4 LB positions in that system

Vilma is 6 1 and 230

Beason 6 0 and 235

the reason vilma is with the saints in the first place is because the jets switched to a 3-4 and traded him off because he didn't fit the system.  sean payton wants to play him at weak ILB in their scheme because

"Yeah, I don't think anyone wants to place him over that guard bubble and have to take on that block," Payton said on Sirius/XM NFL Radio, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "And I think he's a guy that runs to the ball and has great vision, very instinctual football player. I think you take some of that away if all of a sudden he's playing over an uncovered guard and now his size becomes an issue

tldr vilma is undersized too.  so basically your comparison means dick.  an archetypal 3-4 stud middle linebacker is someone like patrick willis who's ten pounds heavier than both of them.  beason was a very good/occasionally great middle linebacker in our 4-3 because he has strong instincts and above average coverage skills.  he's rangy and can cover a lot of turf.  those skills are secondary for 3-4 ILBs in favor of pass rushing and the ability to shed blockers which are two areas where beason isn't really a standout.

Seems to be, guy is a media dude who specializes in such information.

Apparently he talked about it on WFNZ weeks ago and it slipped through the cracks.

Thanks Kurb, when I posted that I was on my phone and for some reason his twitter profile wasn't loading up, so I couldn't see.

If this is indeed the case, then I hope he has a great year and re-signs with us for a reasonable rate, but I have a feeling that the Blackburn and Klein acquisitions were made with him leaving in mind.  I hope not though, Beason has always been one of my favorites.

Saying we save 2.5 million when the fact is we have a cap hit of 8 million or 10.5 is the same logic my wife uses when she goes out and spends 200 dollars and wants to me to compliment her because she saved me 100 dollars.  I know it is a savings since you would be the hook for much more but it doesn't feel that great.

He is going to have to play great this year to justify either number.

    • A 12 year old playing madden can draft better than anyone the panthers have had under David Tepper
    • Throw in the fact that you have to overpay free agents to come here.  Everyone wants to win--or at least have a decent chance at winning. This followed the Bryce Young trade up draft.  That is the draft that crippled an already crippled franchise.   They moved up to #1 and paid the king's ransom only to admit that they weren't sure who they were going to draft--then they picked the wrong guy....amazing incompetence. Now let's take a look at the AT trade--we basically got some future mid round draft capital.  Minnesota has a QB on their roster who reads quickly, is accurate, and is only 24.  (Brosmer).  Minnesota is keeping him on the roster because on the PS, they would lose him.  Is he the answer if we traded AT for him?  Maybe not, but there is potential--as much potential as you will find on day 3 of the draft.  He would be, at worst, the best backup QB on the roster.  Now, did we give Dalton a ton because he has a good relationship with Young?  What if Young does not work out?   Then you have 2 mistakes and no QB. I dunno--I believe in competition, and I believe there should always be efforts to improve the roster--are we trying to make ourselves not look inept?  With Baker and Darnold leaving Charlotte for successful turnarounds, are we capable of having a good QB?   Cam was natural ability and he had the Alpha gene, and we drove him into the ground.
    • When he looks like trash this week against the Cardinals what's going to be the excuse?
