Why were there no designed roll outs for cam?

Tell that to Barner, Brandon Williams, Gettis, and other guys trying to survive cuts and make their first roster.

Hey I am going to put you in but the play we are running is crap so you'll probably be tackled for a loss, or the pass will be defended really well. Don't worry though its just preseason. Smh

Although these games are good for evaluation practice is where the majority of evaluation will come from.

Sometimes media and fans put too much stock in these games because that is what we get to see.

Those guys will make it or not based on what they see at practice and in meetings.

Even our run game opened up when clausen came in. Was it just a matter of shula opening the playbook more with the 2nd team and 3rd team offense, or was it a lack of chemistry with the starters?

I personally think shula opened up the playbook more for the 2nd and third team offense because the rbs were bouncing off to the side and not trying to force it through the middle like williams was all game.

I don't care if they run a high school triple option, do something impressive!

They have managed to make Barner look awful, a guy who just had a 1700 yard season. I almost cried when I saw Reggie Bush highlights from last night.

This better be the best decoy job since WW2 when they put a dead pilot somewhere off the coast of France with fake secret plans for the invasion of Europe effectively putting German reserves in the wrong areas.

How many times has this organization drafted somebody like this only to waste them?

I was asking myself why we haven't been moving the pocket in the preseason... especially with our poor oline play.

We've already announced to the world that we're picking up where we left off in the last 6 weeks of the season with Chud's offense, so I'm not sure why we're so concerned with hiding our money plays... all a team has to do is get tape of our last 6 games.

Yas reported that Jackson balked at only being offered a one year deal.  So yeah, I assumed he was offered something, but I didn't realize that Shula is still working under his QB Coach contract until I read your post.

I guess it makes good financial sense then, huh?

I am sure that Shula got more money to be the OC. But a guy under contract already doesn't refuse when you give him a promotion. And there was no leverage to negotiate a longer contract since there are other candidates and you really want the job. So you take the job figuring that if you do well you will get to renegotiate at the end of the season and have the leverage you need. If you don't you will be a QB coach somewhere else.

I am sure Hue balked. That would be your initial position in the negotiations. Go from there and try for multiple years. But it wasn't as if he had a choice really. No one else was looking at him as a coordinator. He ended up with a job elsewhere at a lower position likely for less pay. There is no way he would have turned it down if it had even been offered.

we will have a full playbook by game one.  And which would you rather have, a touchdown in the preseason, or a healthy Cam Newton?

You know when I'm most worried about the health of Cam Newton?

When Mike Shula calls a 7-step drop and the line in front of Cam doesn't touch a soul and he's doing his best to avoid the avalanche of defensive linemen coming his way.

THAT'S when I'm worried most about the health of Cam Newton.

But we're seeing plenty of those damn calls in this pre-season, aren't we?

We all know how horrible our o-line is yet they called no roll outs for him and just let him drop back to get sacked or pressured. However as soon as clausen comes in he rolls out of the pocket for a pass. Does that make sense to anyone? Why did they call none for cam but for clausen?

Cam can't square his shoulders...thats why.

No only bootlegs but id also like the coaching staff to take the reins off of cam and let him audible. Remember when jake wore the sleaves with the playsheet on it? why not have that? Give him a play and maybe he can audible to a run, playaction, screen pass, short pass, deep pass, etc.. from the sheet that fits the same basic playformation that the shula gives him.  Or is that even remotely possible?

There are few if any audibles in preseason for one very important reason. It screws up the evaluation process. The main reason we keep plays simple is it keep the evaluation process simple. And evaluation is the main goal of a Rivera coached team.

Whether it be Offense or Defense. Keeping the plays simple allows for better evaluation. No blitzes, few stunts, basic zone, pure vanilla. No read option, no screens, no mis-direction, pure vanilla.

The coaches basically know who they have. They need to find out what those guys can and cannot do. It is the main reason that preseason is just a glorified practice. Hence no audibles.

It does suck for the fans. But it is extremely important for the coaches. Even with a team that has as much experience as we do.
