How much is Hardy worth?

Base your answers assuming he signs before the season starts,

How much guaranteed and overall?

Lets say it its a 5-6 year deal your choice.

What would you consider a steal, fair market value, and at what point are we paying too much?

I am still trying to research it but would like some other opinions on it. Thanks.

spotrac has a list of top DE salaries in the NFL, you can view it here

looking at base salaries the top-paid end for 2013 is jared allen at $14m. peppers is making $13m, bengals end michael johnson is making $11m, anthony spencer and chris long are making $10.5 and $7m respectively, and sixth on the list is charles johnson at $6m.

changing the option from base salaries to average salaries shuffles the figures significantly, presumably because of different contracts being front or back-loaded, guaranteed, etc. charles johnson, for instance, jumps from sixth to third, behind mario williams and peppers, with an average salary of $12.5m.

that's pretty much what we have to go off of. assuming he'll stay productive, signing him now seems like it'd work to our advantage. based off of his prior stats i think gettleman could get away with something like a 4-year $30m contract with a number of incentives and escalators built in.

but i'm no expert

Steal?  $5 million per

Fair Market $7-8 million per year now, $10 million once he gets to double digit sacks. (game 9)

Too Much:  $14 million.

THis is not based on research, but I know 4-3 DEs who can get after the passer are paid very well.  Many will say I am crazy when they see these numbers, but Hardy is no less valuable than CJ.  Hardy can get after the passer from a standing position (OLB), a 3 technique, and the RDE.  He is good vs. the run.  He is about 25 or 26 and entering his prime.

My guess?  He will sign a 5-year extension that included this year's salary for about $37-40 million.  If Gettlemen waits, we will not be able to retain him.   When the NFL discovers what he can do, and when there is no risk of injury, the price will go up.

Unfortunately I think you're right.

I'm hoping for a steal at 5/30

I just think that it'd be a huge knock on Hardy if we offered him 6mil a year.

I really believe that at the end of the day, it all comes down to CJ if he wants Hardy here or not. Johnson is going to have to take a pay cut in order for us to be able to give Hardy a reasonable contract.

No, it is good. In fact, it's great. Yet, does it warrant an elite level contract? Ehhhh, me thinks not. Had Greg put up bigger sack numbers, then G-Man's hands would tied... but they're not.

Holy Deity forbid that Hardy had a fluke season or loses motivation after signing the deal.

Pretty sure Gettleman wouldn't be talking to him about it now if he thought it was a fluke.. geez..

5 for 35  25 mill guaranteed would make me ecstatic.

5 for 40  27 mill guaranteed would be good negotiating all around

5 for 45  25 mill guaranteed would make me think Hardy has a good agent.

5 for 50  30 mill guaranteed would make me think Hurney was in the building

5 for 55  30 mill guaranteed would make me think someone found a Hurney contract laying around and just used white out on the names.

Anything else then we should make a 1st round tender and match the offer.

    • Nobody on the huddle is saying we have an elite group offensively across the board. They aren't great. They're young. If you are expecting someone to agree with your position of blaming everyone around Bryce Young nearly three full seasons into his career you are going to be left holding the bag save for a handful of people who act like they are paid to defend his honor. Bryce Young is not a guy who has had to claw and fight his way into starting jobs in football. He's had the best to work with and been gifted roles since he was a teenager. The Panthers have one of the youngest rosters in the league and with us needing an infusion of young defensive talent in the upcoming draft we're only going to get younger. We need a QB who possesses the ability to elevate those around him. If you can't agree with me on that then there's nothing further to discuss.
    • All Bryce and the Panthers had to do was split with the Saints and a rookie QB. The bar was so low. They even had a whole bye week to prepare. The time for singing kumbaya was before that game. Anyone still talking about Bryce earning a second contract 43 games into his career is living a fantasy. He might get one from the Tepper owned Panthers but he's damn sure not earned it.
