Wagner doesn't think Cam can beat them by throwing.

Remember the comments from opposing defenders about how the way to beat Newton was to play coverage rather than blitzing?

I've seen no indication that opposing DCs think any differently.  on the contrary: Wagner's comments confirm they still think that way.

You can think they're wrong - and I hope they are - but at this point, that's still their take.

Is that not what I just said?

If that's what you believe, I'm not sure where the disagreement is

My point was that the phrase "stop the run and force Cam to pass" is a misleading statement because teams don't game-plan and run defenses that are designed around stopping the run. They aren't run blitzing or stacking the box against Carolina, they are using four man rushes and light box formations with cover 2 and cover 3 zone schemes as primary defensive formations against Carolina - these are pass defenses. The fact is that, for the past two years, the formula has been: "Stop the pass and you stop the Panthers, because they can't run on any defensive alignment" - especially last year. During 2011 there wasn't really a good defense against Carolina, which is why when they started running passing defenses primarily, our run game took off, where as early in the season it was our passing attack that was prolific when teams were attempting to sell out on the run.

Then we're just talking semantics and phraseology here.

When I say 'stop the run' I'm not necessarily implying stacking the box or run blitzing, just basic run defense.

Teams think that's enough because they don't believe Newton can beat them passing (essentially what Wagner is saying).

Newton needs to show them they're wrong.

My take: Having Ted Ginn actually play well as a receiver goes a long way toward making that happen.

Will grant that, but would add this:

If they haven't done their study on him using more than just that game, they're not doing their jobs.

absolutely, but having played amateur competitive sports for 10 years post highschool If I knew a team didn't win 50% of their games and they didnt play well the only time I  played them I'd feel pretty sure about myself to.   I know this is the NFL and every game is super competitive and up for grabs/ I'm not trying to sell the fact that my situation compares to a great extent to this one but from the attitude towards your  oppenent stand point I think its the same.    They feel like this is the best way and honestlly I think they are right.......but I do think that Cam can win that way if the running game is null.

...These Aholes are rip for the pickin. Wilson is going to suffer a sophmore slump....Hawks are like 0 and 62 on openers on the east coast for 1pm games. I feel we have improved over last year and are the better team. Cam will have to win this one for us with making the right decisions...D and special teams will give us a good chance, its whether the O can capitalize.

I don't think I'd play 'man press' with Ted Ginn.

Seahawks may be confident enough to do that.  I wouldn't.

Why not. Ginn hasn't shown all that much as a reciever in the league yet. Better to press him than give him a free release. When Cam drops back he will see tighter coverage and smaller windows to fit the ball into than against most teams. Hopefully he will use his legs to buy time for them to come free. If he trys to slip it in there, I don't think he is accurate enough to not get picked.

I love that Wagner called out Cam.  Talk about locker room bulletin board material.  Cam is fired up to prove that he is a leader and a great quarterback.  He is very competitive and does his best when people doubt him.  He wants to prove his critics wrong. This year we finally have the receiver options to give him plenty of quality targets.  If he wants to be a leader then lead us to victory doing whatever you have to in order to win.  Run when you can and  pass well when you need to move the sticks. Make some  big time throws to Smith,Ginn, LaFell, Edwards or Hixon.  I hope Cam can rise to the occasion.  It  would be excellent to win your opener at home and let everyone know that this team is ready to compete with anyone.

LOL we'll see  how long that lasts during Sunday's game. Remember Cam's rookie year when everybody tried to make Cam beat them with his arm? over 300 yards in the first 2 games almost 400 in the 3rd. I pray they commit to stopping the run

Over 400 yards per in his first 2 games as a pro.

At least get the facts straight.

Huh? Who are you talking to?

Here ya go.

Its the same thing they did to McNabb in the playoffs. They want Cam to force balls so there talented CBs can pick them off. I say we call there bluff and punch them in the mouth.
