A fascinating article on David Shaw (aka Why David Shaw should be our next coach)

Yes please.

As for Chip Kelly, his philosophy is quite simple. Attack the defense where they show weakness, creating as many one-on-one matches as possible.

If we get Shaw I'll probably have the biggest clue ever.

Kelly's offense is actually capable of wearing out both defenses at the same time.

why hire an innovative, energetic football mind with an actual presence on the sideline when you could get a crusty defensive guy that can play hard-nosed football and run the football 50 times a game and control the clock with a pocket-passing game manager?

This.

It starts at the very top. I honestly worry if JR would hire that type of head coach. I have to say I doubt it.

Why do this to yourselves?

We'd have to buy out his contract. He's shown zero interest in jumping to the NFL. He's a current college coach. Richardson likes defensive guys. I would bet money that Gettleman does as well.

We'll hire a D Coordinator and give him his first shot. Go Panthers.

Not splitting hairs here, but how do you know he has "zero interest" in taking a promotion to the NFL?

He's under contract at a very prestigious university. Stanford has a rich tradition and is pipeline to the NFL for players AND coaches. Him commenting on a possible move to the NFL would ruffle the wrong feathers with the alumni, administration, board of trustees, players, and most importantly incoming recruits. According to Rivals.com; Stanford has the #22 class coming in next season. One or two of those guys decommit, and they could drop out of the top25.

I know he's signed a big contract extension recently, but there are ways around that. In most cases, I highly doubt a school would hold a guy back. Especially a school like Stanford that is an excellent job and could have their pick of suitable HCs.

If he wants to take a promotion (and mind you it may be with the Raiders instead of the Panthers), like I said he's going to go and the school won't stop him. The thing that worries me though is Mr.Richardson and his cheapness. Is he going to want to pay big money for arguably the top NFL prospect college coach, and still have to pay Rivera? or take a chance on an NFL coordinator that he could hire on the cheap?

IMHO, Shaw would be an excellent fit for the Panthers but the $$$$ is going to be an issue and I don't see it happening. A coordinator like Perry Fewell is a much more realistic option.

I was one of the several that were on the David Shaw bandwagon last season. I'm really impressed with what he's done at Stanford and he doesn't take any crap, which is something we sorely need here.

I'd be surprised if Shaw isn't an NFL HC within two years. I think the Raiders could be a logical fit for his services. Their history of throwing money around and obviously the location could be big factors in landing Shaw. The thing that concerns me as a Panther fan is JR's rumored unwillingness to sign a college HC; and obviously the pricetag.

The sentiment here that Shaw doesn't want to head to the NFL makes no sense to me. He doesn't strike me as an egomaniac like Spurrier, Saban, Miles, Meyer, Mack Brown, etc who have to have total control and basically be the defacto chancellor. I think the reason Stanford gave him that lucrative extension is due to the fact that NFL teams were sniffing around and he was listening.

Another college coach to keep an eye on (not necessarily in Carolina) is Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. We saw how he shook Notre Dame down for a new contract after getting embarrassed in the NC game last year by flying to meet with the Eagles. I don't want this guy, and for the record I don't care for him, but I'm surprised his name hasn't popped up here more often. The thing about Kelly is he seems to fall under the aforementioned list control freaks like Meyer, Mack Brown, Saban, etc. Like Greg Schiano, his coaching style/player management may not transition well into the NFL. Notre Dame is not like any other NCAA coaching job. That fanbase, alumni, etc will run your ass out of town a lot quicker than other places. So Kelly may want to strike while the iron is hot.

With that being said, if I had to pick a leader in the clubhouse as the next Panther head coach.....I would honestly say Perry Fewell. He was one of the finalists with Rivera here a few years ago, and obviously has extensive connections to the state of North Carolina (i believe he is from Hickory) and the Giants.
