Why Lovie Smith is just what the Panthers need.

Actually no he isn't... Smith and Rivera never saw eye-to-eye on the defense.

Lovie- Tampa 2

Rivera- Jim Johnson D

Don't think so. Lovie Smith was brought in for the 2004 season and he hired Ron Rivera the same year. Rivera stayed for 3 seasons through 2006. His stint in Philly as the Linebackers Coach under Jim Johnson from 1999-2003 may have had some impact, but neither him or Sean McDermott have the Panthers playing anything close to a Jim Johnson-style defense.

Lovie would be a good hire....but the question with him would it depends on who the OC would be in the end.....WE need an offensive minded coach with the way the nfl has changed over time....its all about points....PIs are given out for putting a finger on a WR, QBs are overly protected....We need someone who knows how to use Cam....We need to sign him as a franchise QB and build and continue to build.....

And again... The reason Rivera was let go fro Chicago was because his style did not reflect Smith's style of defense. We do run a more aggressive defense then a Tampa 2.

Point being to all this is Lovie Smith is 10x the coach that Rivera is.

Lovie Smith is a decent head coach, and he would probably be an improvement on Rivera. The only slight mark on his head coaching career would be only three play off appearances in nine seasons, but in that time he never had an explosive QB like Cam to rely on. Even with Jay Cutler, he didn't have a QB that is as good as Cam. For me, if you throw Cam into that Bears side of the past two seasons, they would have got to the play offs for sure.

I think Lovie Smith's style of head coaching would help this team's defense push on to become one of the league's top units. All he would need is the right OC to get the best out of the offense, something which didn't seem to be the case in his last couple of seasons in Chicago.

You do realize that the only reason they won the Superbowl that year was because of Tony Dungy's defense.

Gruden is overrated and players hated playing for him.

Now Jay Gruden on the other hand...

That's my point. Our defense is ok, if we get an offensive coach we could be instant contender.
