Adrian Peterson's 2-year-old son is currently in critical condition in a South Dakota hospital ... after he was allegedly severely beaten by the man dating the mother of his child, TMZ has learned.

Officials tell us they've arrested the suspect, 27-year-old Joseph Patterson ... who's been charged with aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant.

According to law enforcement, emergency responders arrived to the apartment where Peterson's son was living at 5:46 PM on Wednesday ... and found the child unresponsive.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital and medical experts determined the injuries were consistent with abuse.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... the child suffered severe head injuries.

If this is true, wow.

I hear Sioux Falls has two really good hospitals though, and one really good children's hospital.

@Ajkfan: Sounds like Adrian Peterson is back in town, will practice today and speak to media after to clear the air on the SD situation. #Vikings

I hope it wasn't actually his child, and more importantly I hope the child is okay...and the POS that did it is locked up for life and beat to poo in prison.

The last thing we need is AP to play his ass off in dedication to someone... hopefully we dont get shitted

Dude, really...

We're talking about a two-year-old child being beaten, maybe even beaten to death, and you're worried about whether it's gonna inspire him to perform better in a game?  How ridiculously stupid is that?

There are more important things in this world than football, at least when you grow up!

    • If you need someone to run your multi-billion dollar business, maaayyyybe don't hire a guy whose previous work experience includes repeated blows to the head and literal brain damage but IDK.
    • Extrapolate that with every QB for that matter. I guarantee you there's quite a bit of missed opportunities and yards left on the field for everyone. Many NFL QBs deal with WRs not putting in A+ effort, subpar o-line play and other deficiencies. The great ones are able to rise above these issues and create opportunities for plays. Guys like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes can both play in and out of structure, as well as find ways to get yards when things break down and mask mistakes by throwing guys open, creating opportunities from nothing, etc. Bryce Young has only shown he's able to make things happen when the rest of the team picks up his slack. Very rarely does he create those opportunities himself. When this is a consistent pattern year after year with Bryce where he shows up lackluster, it's a concern. This is year three and he should be elevating the team as a first overall pick this franchise traded up for.  He was far from elevating anyone against JAX. In fact, he needed others to elevate and create for him. Excuses may be fine for a rookie, but this is year three for the first overall pick. Not looking good so far.
    • I think the worst issue is coaching. Countless bad snaps, XL not getting his feet in or trying on runs plays, our centre being down field when he didn't need to be. All seem to be from poor coaching for me. I believe Canales is to soft to rip the players a new one when the fug up. Plus I honestly believe that Canales is slow getting his plays in giving Bryce less time to diagnose and adjust to the defence. Don't worry I could of head butted Bryce for that fumble and the 4th down throw aways but the other plays are explainable to me
