Gil Brandt: Hakeem Nicks to Panthers Make Sense

If we trade for Hicks, does he help us right now?

lol a wideout whos going to magically learn our offense in a week. How often does that happen mid-year with receivers? Historically, has that even EVER happened?

Oh wait... No... It all makes sense now! Lets give Beason away for peanuts and then trade away a young RB for Nicks, when by all accounts it appears that LaFell has cemented the same role on our team as Nicks would give us.

Oh but wait, Nicks is way better than LaFail TCF....and has been doing it for longer. And Stewart hasn't seen the field in like 4 years... So we should just trade Stew for another "late round pick" because at least we'd get something for him and offload his horrible contract and save tons of money!

TCF you're such a moron! Nicks is so awesome, plus he's from Carolina!!! Just look at his production this year... Nicks is totally worth trading Stewart for...GOSH!

Am I doing it right?

booooo!

I think we'd have to get the folks in the Giants front office highly inebriated before they would even consider taking Stewart's contract.

It really wouldn't be all that bad.  We'd eat his bonus, so the Giants would only be responsible for just over half a year of his 2013 base salary.  Typically, most players in the NFL don't have their base salary guaranteed (so I'm assuming neither does Stew).  And if they don't think he's worth his salary, they could then release him at seasons end without owing him anything more.  However, if they do want to keep him, but not at that price, they can try to renegotiate his contract.

Bottom line is it's really a low risk situation for the Giants.  The question is if they would even want Stew...particularly since it's unlikely he'll see the field prior to the trade deadline so they won't know about his health.  Not to mention that we might not want to let him go, or even have any interest in Nicks.  But if both teams do have interest, the trade does make sense for both teams.

At this point, we don't even have a clue when Stewart will be healthy this season.

The injury concerns combined with the contract make that a difficult trade to sell. I just don't see it happening.

I totally agree about his health.  I guess if we were willing to make that trade (and I have no reason to think the Panthers are even slightly interested), we would have to convince the Giants to take a leap of faith and the doctors would have to confirm that Stew will be good to go in a couple of weeks.

As for the contract, like I said, I don't see that being an issue at all.  Nevertheless, I don't see this as anything more than fan discussion and nothing will come of it.  I think Rivera would really like to have Stewart on the field if we are able to make a real playoff push.  Particularly if he is healthy...and rested.

Thats absolutely eye popping, I dont remember that at all. I s'pose those two are in the same ballpark as far as talent goes as well. I still think it would be difficult to come in and have even 300 in our offense at this point. Even with moving Smitty to the 2.

With Bradford and Fish eh?

edit: ahh gotya they had no else to throw it to.

    • This while he didn't single handily LOSE the game on any one play.....    He was a first overall pick, one we paid a fortune for..... the bar for him is a 10 foot dunk not a 5"8 children's rim.   32 for 49 for 287 with 1 td and 1 int in two games vs the worst team in the conference, two critically important games that we would be 9-5 and competing for the #2 if he had led us to victory....   Ive given him props for the TD to tet.... it was the best pass ive ever seen him make.....   But putting up these kind of numbers isn't up to par. Defenses stack the box and dare him to throw....  and he still puts up medicore at best numbers.    To win with Bryce young the entire rest of the team has to be absolutely perfect to make up for his deficiencies.... so while he didn't "lose" this game for us..... HE DEFFINATLY DIDNT GO WIN IT FOR US. (Which is the REALISTIC EXPECTATION)
    • His O is just built on taking repeated shots and that’s not BY’s game.  It was always a round peg and square hole…. But I also agree with your post.  I hate OC HCs.  Especially green ones.   I never liked anything about the setup
    • I get that. He's also trying to do HC and OC this year which I think is just too much for him. I think it's hard to call plays from the sidelines. That view from up top helps them see what a defense is doing better. A few HCs can do it because they have the QBs and experience to pull it off. DC has neither. I think DC may have spread himself too thin and Bryce isn't the QB to be able to pull of his end of it either. How much they compliment each other in creating this offensive bleh, yet to be determined. Doesn't really matter because it's still awful.
