PFF Game Ball

A close one between Cam Newton and Star Lotulelei, but the vet gets the nod over the rookie with his smooth performance completing 88% of his passes including five-of-six for 74 yards when blitzed.

Cam absolutely shredding the blitz, obviously been working on that in practice since ARI.

Push for DROY

Star Lotulelei (+4.1) vaulted himself right back to the head of the race for Defensive Rookie of the Year with a dominating performance in run defense, leading the way to hold the Rams to 3.0 YPC rushing. Predominantly lining up at DRT (27-of-43 snaps), the rookie gained a stop on 33% of his snaps in run defense, including two TFLs and two more tackles for short gain. That ridiculous number could’ve been even higher if not for a missed tackle in pursuit of a Zac Stacy run. Whether it was his quickness, as at 0:33 in the second, or his power, like at 0:19 in the third, the St. Louis OL simply couldn’t handle Lotulelei in the run game. He proved tough to handle as a pass rusher too, notching up two hurries and a hit on the day.

Super Star.

Early in the year Cam struggled mightily against the blitz.  I blame it half and half on him and Shula.  He was holding the ball too long.  He should've been throwing it away or scrambling sooner.  However, Shula just kept calling 5 to 7 step dropbacks with slow developing routes.  It was the perfect storm of how to stagnate an offense.  Glad to see both he and Shula adapting to this.

I would love to have 3 straight DROY but Star would probably have to go crazy to beat Alonso.

strong against the run according to advanced metrics is all well and good, but unless you've got traditional stats that jump out off the page (tackles, sacks, FF's) you probably won't win.

    • If this was 3 years ago during BY rookie year and it was fair "best man wins QB", white would have easily won.  I was a hooker fan and it didn't cost the Panthers what 100,000 to bring him in. White just knows to non-stop study the playbook and he's a 30year old pro at this stage.  Boogie too, but he ran out of PS call ups and only the love child of Gilbert and goodwin can remain on the PS. That guy from the 49ers put on a show for a guy just off another team. Im too sick, cause I enjoy following the PS and 6 moves mid-season is a big day!!...
    • Before rip me an ass, let me voice my opinion. It is not sustainable winning with 103 yards passing, no touchdowns, and turnovers. If they didn't have Rico blowing sh%t up, they would be in deep trouble. I am thrilled that they are winning. I am not being negative, just realistic. The season is almost half way over and they still have the problem of anemic QB production. Believe me, they know something has to give sooner or later. I like Bryce as a person and seems like a good dude. But being a good dude will not win games in the long run. Sooner or later, they will have to make a change. Their is a certain level of production that you need from the QB position. This kind of production will not get them to the next level.
