Our New Identity as a Dink n' Dunk Offense

Captroop

FWIW, I still think Chip Kelly can and will be successful if they build that roster around his offensive vision and get a better and more durable dual threat QB than Vick (which stings me to say because I am a Vick fan).

Also, it will take a year or two for the Eagles players to acclimate to the pace and run it well.  I really think he can win with that pace.

But I don't think there is a right or wrong answer about pace.  I just think whatever you do, do it well.  If you go fast and play like poo it may help you score more points, but it doesn't help you win more games.

totally agreed.

As was just said earlier, the whole notion we are dink and dunk would be fine if it were true but it isn't.  Our passing yards per attempt against Minnesota were 9.3.  Against the Rams it was 12.0 and against  TB is was 6.9.

I have no idea where they got their numbers from but here is the NFl.com which carries official stats.

I wish people would do their homework before they made stupid assertions.  And posters here should take what talking heads say with a grain of salt and do their own verification.  Those guys on Mike and Mike are idiots.  Truth is that the way we are playing now is not that different from what we did before.  At least based on YPA.  We are hitting almost 80% where before it was 60% and cam is not overthrowing guys much but honestly we were close to winning all three of our losses.  We are doing the extra things and playing with confidence.  Makes a big difference.

First, Cam is not a dink and dunk qb. He made it very clear that the panthers offense are learning to go to it when they can and dink and dunk when they have to. Second, we all know that the difference between win and lost in the first two games was a couple of dropped balls. Third, why when folks say this team isn't about Cam, all they seem to do is make the argument that the Cam's performance or lack there of, is the difference in the team's win lose ratio as if there aren 't other factors. Fifth, the Panthers Defense if play great but let's not lose sight of the reality that it's only as "stellar" as it's ability to defend all teams.

YPA is an awful measure of dink/dunk because if you have good YAC your YPA is high.

if you look at http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/13994/cam-newton

you see that a significant chunk of Cam's passes are being thrown in the 1-10 yard range.  but is that dink and dunk?

I don't think so.  Comparing it to last year he has a very, very similar pass breakdown in terms of areas to which he is throwing the ball.  I think we do have a higher percentage this year in the 1-10 yard range, and a smaller percentage in the 11-20, but I think that is adjusting to what the defense is giving us.  If my quick number crunching is right (it may not be) Cam threw 41% of his passes in the 1-10 yard range last year, this year he's throwing 46%.  But he's also throwing slightly fewer passes behind the line of scrimmage, and slightly more in the 30+ yard range  A big difference is just taking what the defense is giving us IMO...

We'd need to compare Cam to some QB everyone agrees is "dink and dunk" to be sure.

edit: I don't think it is even that bad if Cam is "dinking and dunking."

We know what cam CAN do with his arm... Once teams adjust to dinking and dunking it'll re-open the mid-long ball

If you look at a dink and dunk teams they are looking to dump the ball and looking to dink down the field.  if you look at us, Cam is looking for the downfield passes and coming back to the dink and dunk when they aren't available or pressure develops.  Plus we are using more screens which are short passes and count on YAC. It is a really about whether you are calling dink and dunk plays as your primary  offense or using hot reads and checkdowns when you need to.

So I would agree we are not a dink and dunk team we are just being smarter about taking what the defense is giving us.

This is not a dink'n dunk offence, it is a ball control offense with Cam checking down to 2nd/3rd options to move the chains. The diffence in the last few games is that he is going to these options quicker, rather than holding the ball and forcing the downfield throws. Shula's playcalling was exceptional last night. He mixed up the different sets and formations and Cam was able to surgically dismember the Bucs. This is the type of offense that can win against the best teams because it keeps the defense fresh and runs the clock in the 4th quarter.

Don't know where they got their data from, but in the three game win streak Cam has attempted 75 passes and has 667 passing yards (with 6 passing TDs).

That's 8.9 yards per attempt, NOT "just over 6".

Working mostly in the short areas, Newton was afforded the time to pick his spots with an average depth of target of only 7.1 yards (season average of 9.4) in spite of holding the ball for on average 2.6 seconds. 23 of Newton’s 32 targets were aimed within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage, completing all but four of those for 161 yards and both of his touchdowns.

Who tracks that or even cares. A pass attempt is measured from the line of scrimmage to the end of the play, not how much was in the air and how much was YAC.

I don't know who tracks that. But it can be representative of the difficulty of the passes being attempted as a 15 yard pass has a lower success rate than a 5 yard pass.. I am with you in that i don't care how far the passes travel in the air, just that we are being successful

    • you get so caught up in identifying the problems with everyone else what about an undersized Qb who almost led the league in bad throws last season & couldn't run the offense from under center which made it more difficult for the oL to sell the run on passing plays from the shotgun I dare say right lol & can almost assure you that Bryce Young played a bigger role in the  problems we seen along the oL & with our WR corps than most people realize
