Newton/Dalton taking back the spotlight

excerpt:

Because of 2012's quarterback class, Cam Newton and Andy Dalton became forgotten men. Last year's "class" flashed in in the same vein as 2004 and 1983. Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson emerged as viable superstars, Ryan Tannehill appeared to be potential franchise quarterback material and Colin Kaepernick -- technically a sophomore but lumped with this crew anyway -- nearly won a Super Bowl.

This year, though, the 2012 rookies of note are taking the power back. Specifically Dalton and Newton, who are having breakout seasons midway through 2013. Neither guy "struggled" in 2012, but the perception that they fell behind the Lucks and Wilsons of the world was definitely out there.

None of this is to say that last year's "Big Four Five" (I'm adding Tannehill for my own selfish purposes; he belongs there anyway) aren't good. Luck and Wilson are having particularly strong seasons. But as you can see in the table below, Dalton and Newton started to establish themselves over the first half of this season as premiere NFL quarterbacks.

btw...check out that table on the other side of that link and take a look at kaep and who is just above him.

I would take the 2011 class over the 2012 class right now.

Kaep, Cam, and Dalton are better than Luck, RG3, and Wilson.

yeah, i kind of get an idea that may be some long time debate over which class is better.

no doubt which one was hyped more.

Can the media stop comparing and judging new QBs.  They're just doing this so fans of these young QBs can argue over whose wangs are bigger.  No one did this every week QB judging with the past QB classes.  People used to wait whole seasons before they'd critique individuals.  Nowadays its on a week to week basis.  You can't judge QBs who don't play in a vacuum, on a week-to-week basis.  Some have good teams, play weak schedules, have moronic OCs, have injured players/lack of talent, etc.

Just wait, Newton will be one of the best, I believe it, but at the same time, I don't have to put down the other QBs to believe this.

We aren't going to know anything about these QBs for at least another few years.  Drew Brees was cut after 5 years and look at him now.  Rodgers didn't even start until he was 26 or 27.  The attention paid to all these new QBs is ridiculous.

    • I hope he finds his lane in year 2.  Now that we signed Walker, I'm really intrigued how Dan feels about the DL. Is there a piece there in R1 that presents value/BPA and fills a void for one of the spots w/ DB and Wharton.  I'll give Wharton another year to show us why he was signed here. With A'Shawn gone, I don't think BBIII is it.  Our edges are set and our LBs are balanced. Horn/Mike Jack and Moehrig will hold the secondary together. DB is, well...DB.  However, I think this is an area that is the biggest question mark right now. I see 1 of 3 spots that are locked and loaded for us. If we move to a 4 down front, I assume Phillips would slide down to be the additional linemen, but we still have questions about the other two spots in either scheme.  I'd feel better with a tradeback, but I do wonder how McDonald would do here. Maybe Woods....but McDonald really does peek my interest.  Or, can Jackson take that next step. The coaching staff speaks highly of him for what little he played. Here's hoping he stays healthy and comes into TC with something to prove. There's a spot to be taken, here's hoping he takes it.
    • Not many people talking about DT, but we have a need.  (DE)  Now this guy is a NT like Brown III
