Panthers can’t reach long-term deal with Peppers

CHARLOTTE -- Today’s 4 p.m. deadline came and went without Julius Peppers’ signature on a long-term contract, setting the stage for another year of drama for the Carolina Panthers.

Peppers had previously signed the one-year, $16.683 million franchise tender, which guarantees him more than $1 million per game this year. However, there was some hope the Panthers could have signed him to a long-term deal, which would have secured him as well as provided some short-term salary cap relief.

That would have enabled them to pursue some veteran players before training camp to fill in some weak spots on the roster (interior defensive line, offensive line). Now, they’re likely limited to hoping their many young projects develop into serviceable players. That’s a direct result of the eighth-year defensive end taking up 13 percent of this year’s $128 million salary cap alone.

The difference is that most folks felt we would be here, Pepper's comments won't be a surprise or unexpected and Hurney has fair warning at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if we just kept the deal we gave him on the table earlier this year and if he didn't take it just told him we would tag him again. That is still a bunch cheaper than signing him and surely has been done before. Just look at Walter Jones in Seattle. I figure we could tag him for the next 2 years and still save a ton of money. We might like Brown alot and feel we have some great young guys on the roster. Maybe Hurney wasn't feeling much pressure to get the deal done either. And surely Peppers seems to be giving lipservice about wanting to sign a deal. I expect he wants out no matter what. Should actually make the offseason interesting again.

Would've liked to get a deal done, clear some cap space and bring in a few mid-low tier FAs. All of the guys available, though, would just be for depth and most likely wouldn't play big minutes for us. The only guy I really want to bring in is Dewayne Robertson and that still might happen. We should have SOME cap space after we sign our draft picks anyway.

If Peppers had signed a long term deal, he would not have made near the 16.7 million he'll now make this year. Now he can play out the year and then sign long term, better for him...

...and better for us in case he shits the bed

I am sure the Panthers will be fine, but way to "not want to hurt the franchise" Pep. First you dont sign the tender to position the team to allow them to trade you should a good offer be made. You dont get any of the 4 teams you want to play for to make a good offer. Now, you are still here in Carolina on a cap strapped team due to you and as a result their depth is lite.

    • I mean....no lies detected. See above. We have traded a fortune to draft a guy #1 overall that people have lowered standards for to the point that not playing like Jimmy Clausen and looking like a poor man's Kyle Allen occasionally is worthy of a contract extension making him one of the highest paid QB's in the league. That is cope on steroids.
    • summary: "let's talk about your draft, what did you think about Freeling" Dan:   guys with a huge upside, can come in and compete to start.  High ceiling "he does what for your offense?" Dan:   it's hard to find left tackles, guys that big and athletic.  We have Icky coming off an injury, we signed Walker, I believe your offensive line can never be too strong.  If we're going to win the game, it's gotta be up front on both sides of the ball, so we make a point of emphasis on making both sides of the front as strong as possible. "how many mocks did you see Monro falling to you." Not many times, left tackles are gonna go a lot earlier than when we took him.  We want to add the best player, in free agency or the draft"  that's our philosophy, to get the best players possible. "Hunter and Brazzell." Dan:  we followed the board.  Lee we felt very highly of him , super strong.  Brazzel so flexible and loose, can open the verticle.  Will Lee we held in high regard. "you take a look at your receiver room, Coker, my goodness, your offensive rookie of the year in Tet.  Lost Rico, but there is Jonathan Brooks. " Brooks coming off two knee injuries, he worked his way back, looking great, fully healthy, will help in pass and run game.  Icky, not sure when he's coming back but we're excited about both "plan on extending Bryce" we'll keep talking, will keep internally.  We believe in him, has such a great grasp of Canales and offense, has improved every year. "he's clearly come back from the benching, the arrow is trending up, where does he feel" Bryce knows where we stand with him, when and if a deal gets done, he knows we feel great with him, we'll get something done at the right time. "if this a prove it situation?" everyone in the building has to prove it, has to earn it. Tmac was everything we wanted, his work ethic, he's so big and talented, but he puts the work in, and is a great teammate. "your level of expectation, the building's level of expectation for 2026 "our goal is to win the division every year, we know we have to earn it.  we have to put the work in every day, proving it on the practice field, and our  guys know that." "schedule" we haven't opened at home in 2 or 3 years.  We love prime time games, hope we get some "
    • this one is gold:     Bryce has a cult inside the Panthers fanbase that has truly developed some NPC hivemind. I'll never understand how he's captured the true essence of the casual fan like that.
