PFF: Star is the best run stopping DT in the league

The only player that I think will give Star a run for his money for DROY is Kiko Alonzo (the sexier pick). Not taking anything away from Alonzo, Star's impact on this team is prolific. More than his tackles is what his very presence means to our talented edge rushers and linebackers. Star has to be accounted for, giving them more free reign. He is a great rookie DT on a team that's going places.

Check out NFL.com and they had a listing of leading candidates for ROY honors.  Sadly Honeybadger is leading the race, then it's Richardson followed by Star (but they did put in the Vine of Star manhandling that TB OT last week).  Kiko may have been in between honeybadger and sheldon, but not 100% sure on his position.

Its all bout SCHEME, star is only asked to do one job and that's plug the run lanes sometimes he demands a double team with Edwards and that leads to 1 on 1 opportunities for Johnson and hardy. You can't go off of a website to decide who's the best, Geno Atkins and jj watt, Sheldon Richardson, brandin Mebane, haloti ngata all those guys create mismatches for other guys to make plays. Star is good but he only has one job, getting a pass rush from him is a bonus.

Star Lotulelei is one of the main reason the Panthers have allowed a league-low 13.1 points per game this season, which has been bolstered by the 12.4 points allowed per game during their win streak.

Lowest TD Percentage Allowed In Red Zone Since 2002 2005 Bears 32.5% 2003 Dolphins 32.6% 2006 Ravens 33.3% 2008 Steelers 33.3% >> Panthers: 32.1% through 12 games

This season the Panthers have allowed a touchdown on only 32.1 percent of opponent’s red zone drives (27.8 percent during the streak). Not only is that best in the NFL this season, it’s the best percentage since the league expanded to 32 teams in 2002.

Opponents have reached the red zone 28 times against the Panthers, with nine of those drives ending in touchdowns. The Panthers have held their opponents scoreless on a trip to the red zone seven times.

Nope.

Mel Farr won OROY and Lem Barney won DROY in 1968, followed by Earl McCullogh winning OROY 1968 for the Lions. Of course there were only 16 teams at the time.

Urlacher won DROY in 2000 and Anthony Thomas won OROY in 2001 for the Bears.

Panthers would be the first.

That's dropping some damm fine Lions knowledge there bo. Pie and cheers for you. But...Earl was 69.

We also have Kugbila, who we've yet to see anything from. Hopefully Gettleman saw something he really liked in him, and now that he's had a full year of being coached up we'll be able to see what he can do.  Amini will also be available again although he hasn't been anything spectacular we could sure use him at RG and kick Chandler to RT and I honestly think that's a solid line.  I think we draft a LT or RT depending on who is available from where we pick.

Get lucky and we draft a starting caliber LT, and we can move Gross over the right side. Amini and Wharton can battle it out for RG, Kalil in the middle, Kugz or whomever wins that position at RG, and Gross at RT. That would work for me. Very good starting 5, with plenty of solid backups. With basically only 1 addition.

Personally, as much as a starting quality LT would please me, I'd almost wish we would go Stud WR, or CB. We could sure us a stud at either or both of those positions, and we are better. Ah hellz, grab all 3, then start all over again.

I think it depends in how chandler progresses who knows maybe he'll be our lt next year

I have no problem with Chandler getting everything he needs this off-season to have him ready to compete come Mini, and, Training Camps. I think he is pretty athletic, maybe he can use it to make a name for himself.

He hasn't been bad these last few games. Considering whence he came, he is actually doing well. Give him a full off-season of training and work and see where it leads.

Anywhere but LT that is. I still want an anchor over there. A Stud who has been playing LT for a while and is comfortable there. He doesn't have to be a top 10 pick. Just a solid, healthy, quality LT to be Cams bodyguard for years to come.

We have a poo ton of Linemen coming into camp. But, not one of them qualify as a Stud LT. So we need to bring one in. Other than that. IMO we can put one hellofa good line together next year.

I totally agree but chances of us getting a franchise lt from where we are picking probably wont happen it is possible though especially with gettleman and our scouting department would be nice to get one in the 2nd round like washington did

Back to chandler I really would like to see what he could offer us at tackle though in the preseason he played lights out and didnt give up a single hurry in 4 games (not sure of snap count though) he seems to be ok at guard but in all reality we need to draft or bring a solid guard and tackle this offseason

Man, I hate you now. I've been daydreaming about this for way too long. I mean, we are talking about next year.

We need an anchor at LT. He can be a vet looking for that second contract, looking for a good landing spot. Or it could be from the draft. I would prefer the former for two reasons. He is already groomed and shiney, and he frees up the top of the draft.

FA LT-Amini-Kalil-?-Gross. We have a glut of guys who could fight out for that RG spot, competition like that could only help.

Then again, G-man may be able to find a LT in the draft. Which would be the cheaper way to go. But, you have to trust yourself if you are going to spend a high pick on a LT who is not a top 10 pick.

Maybe G-man is all that. I guess we will find out. Even that perks my giddy just a little bit.

Best case. Chandler picks up all the coaching and teaching over the off-season, and comes in ready to play RT. That would allow us to resign Gross at a fair price, and allow us the luxury to keep searching for that guy to anchor LT.

We could use this draft to address CB, WR, TE, and unless Barner shows up, RB, and even a QB of the future. Leave LT to FA, we have the money, and the need.
