payton's biggest mistake was duplicating the same error he did against the patriots...going 3 and out because of soft playcalling and leaving too much time on the clock for newton and company

granted, the panthers offense had done next to zilch the entire game, but the saints should have put forth a much better effort to get a first down than running up the gut 3x.

when you think about one first down at the end gets New Orleans the win, it would make me mad that they tried to play for the percentages and milk the timeouts and clock. Just play for the win even if it leaves us with an extra 30 seconds. That is Rivera ball (pre 2013 especially). This notion of playing not to lose in the NFL is a joke. Great coaches and there are only a few right now (Belichick, Harbaugh, one or two others) would have thrown it for a first down and put the game away and not left it to chance at the end.

I agree................

 

On Payton's behalf though........our defense was playing at such a high level perhaps he didn't want to chance a sack or pass that could have resulted in a turnover......

 

He was playing the odds and field position....................if this scenario was played 10 times, the Panthers probably only score a TD 1 or 2 times......................this time just happened to be one of them for the Panthers.

Playing not to lose i.e. Foxball, gets you to .500, unless a Peyton Manning falls in your lap.

Unexpected on-side kicks and fake field goals will only get you so far, but if you are going to take the ball out of your best player's hands in the name of killing a little clock, you had better be sure you aren't going to leave them enough time to do anything.

I was also really surprised they Saints didn't try a passing play to get the first down.   When they didn't it reminded me of the Panthers last season and beginning of this one.  By playing so conservative like that I think it gave Cam and the offense a jolt AND just like it burned the Panthers in the past this time we were the benefactor, went down the field and made the other team pay :devil:

I'd agree, but I think he missed an additional example.

The decision to get cute and go for a fake field goal turned out to be a pretty bad one too. Had they pocketed three points there, they'd have only needed a field goal on the final drive.

 

In retrospect his fake field goal looked foolish..........but at the time it was executed he was showing how much he was willing to risk plays like this and the surprise onside kick out of respect to how tough a win it would be for the Saints........

 

The Panthers defense play was strong enough to overcome such plays even when one of them worked .............

      Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.

      I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......

      Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
