First Take 12/23/13 Carolina vs New Orleans

totally agree with Steven A that running the ball for a 3 and out in their last drive was a huge mistake.  They were getting 5-6 yards at will, and a couple of quick slants give them the 1st down they needed to win.  I didn't think there was a chance in hell that they would run-run-run to a 3 and out.  Shocked the hell out of me.

I have to agree with pretty much everything they said to be honest... After we punted the ball away and gave the Saints the ball with less than 2 minutes to go, I never expected Sean Payton to run the ball into the heart of our defense 3 straight times and give our offense one last chance to tie the game up or WIN IT!!!

I have to disagree with everyone that's posted in this thread.

Up until that last drive, we had showed ZERO life... I think we had 1 yd the entire second half to that point. New Orleans' defense was holding us to jack diddly squat... Payton believed in his defense just like Ron believed in ours.

If we lose that game RiverBoat gets blasted in the Media... If Payton decides to throw the ball and it's picked or falls incomplete, he gets hammered by the media. He's getting hammered for running it 3 times. I think if we had shown any signs of being dynamic on offense, or if Smitty is still in the game... Payton throws on 3rd down to Ice the game.

As it was, we were putrid and with 55 seconds and zero time outs, I don't disagree with Paytons call. It back fired... As a Panthers fan, you can't be mad at his call. He passes and converts game over. I was surprised he ran it... But I see why he punted.

Coaches will always get blasted. The buck stops there as they say.

Skip Bayless is a tool; period.  These guys are classic monday morning quarterbacks.  It's easy to say Sean Payton blew it when you know the final score.

You take away one big run, and the taints held us to 3 points the for 59 minutes of football.  We were 0-9 on 3rd down, our biggest threat at WR was out most of the game, and our offense was stagnant in the 4th quarter. They punted to an offense that had, what, 3 or 4 three and outs prior to the last punt, and they gave us back the ball with one minute on the clock against a defense who that was playing pretty darn good.

Carolina earned that win by playing lights out D and ST, and the offense rose to the occasion and won that game.  Cam and company took that game, no one gave it to us.  What a putz these guys are...

The secret here is that Drew Brees is overrated. I actually figured they were going to try and run it out and maybe throw 1 pass. Our defense was huge that series and forced them to make those conservative decisions.

I was pissed that we didn't go for it but Rivera knew our D could give us a chance.

No no, I agree that their defense had been shutting Cam and the offense down all game. However, the head coach has to "Play To Win The Game".. All the Saints needed was 1 first down and it was all over. He has arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the league behind center and completely took the ball out of his hands to run the ball 3 straight times.

Sean Payton was taking chances all game long... The onside kick and the fake FG formation with McCown.. If Sean Payton allows Drew Brees to pass on 3rd down during that drive and Brees didn't see anything, all he has to do is concede a sack and the clock continues to run and they punt it away anyways... but they chose to run it straight into our front 7-8... I am glad they did, but nevertheless it is a decision that may haunt Sean Payton the rest of this season.
