Shula Play-off Solution

If only Lafell played as big as Smitty...ha

But really Cam needs to start throwing on his forward foot to get the ball down in the first half..how many high balls did he launch? at least 5 yesterday...if he does that the receivers will look much better.

If it hits you in the hands, then you should catch it. Simple as that.

I literally rofl'd when Cam tried to throw that fade to McNutt in the endzone

Really he caught the ball just barely out of bounds. I don't see anyone on this roster making that play. Id put him on the field, but more than likely he won't be active for the playoffs.

i disagree about the hixon part but do agreed about mcnutt. Lafell's route running is lackluster and seems he can't make a high catch even though being 6'2, Lafell has literally not made an impact these last two games with smith being out, I do believe his snaps need to be given to hixon or mcnutt.

Cam's last incompletion of the day yesterday infuriated me. Pissed me off to no end.

And it wasn't because of Cam... it was because of Lafell.

Yes, the announcers took yet another opportunity to lament Cam's "inaccuracy" after the play where the ball was thrown ahead of Lafell and grazed off his fingertips. But was Cam "inaccurate" on that particular play?

No, he was not.

The PROBLEM was that Lafell as dogging his route after he made his cut (a deep in-route). And Cam put the ball right where Lafell SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

But Lafell wasn't there because he was merely trotting after he made his cut rather than RUNNING his route.

If Lafell doesn't loaf on that route (*and* assuming he caught the pass when he got there), the Panthers would have had 1st and 10 across midfield on their next to last possession, knocking on the door to at least a FG.

But, no, Cam made an "innaccurate" throw... because he was assuming his WR intended to run the route like a damn professional.

I think that it is ridiculous to blame Shula for our offensive woes....not his fault. One thing that I wish he would've done is run the QB lead off tackle on 2nd down instead of 3rd on our last drive. That is our best running play when we go off tackle and pull Kalil. Cam has been playing great situational football and making the right throws when it counts, our passing game concerns me with Cam severely overthrowing open receivers early and the inability of our receivers to get away from coverage.

Why, he almost caught it? It was just his footwork coming down. But the ball was well played, and he got it.

Cause it was McNutt and I didn't expect it lol plus the fact that Falcons were about to let him score on his only target all year

I'm not an expert at evaluating effort. But I did see Mike Tolbert and Richie Brockel wide open on the check down. I mean they could have caught the ball with no one in ten yards.

It was nice to see him go up and catch it but keeping your feet in bounds is part of playing receiver. The way he angled his toe on the landing was a big mistake, he was more worried about keeping his feet under him than staying in bounds.

I came away from that play thinking McNutt could be a useful player but the footwork was criminal.

Look at who we have played lately. The Jets and New Orleans both have good defenses. Atlanta probably played their best game all year against us. Sure the offense could improve but lets be real here. Our schedule was deemed the hardest at the beginning of the year. As we move forward things only get tougher. Honestly how many folks have said we haven't given Cam enough weapons. How is it all the play calling then? Could he be better? Absolutely. After all this is his first year doing in many years. He is learning and developing as he goes. Much like I said about Rivera over the past few years. Given how it has turned out so far maybe folks will be willing to give Shula some time as well.

It's the playcalling because we don't help out with short passes and getting players like our RBs and Ginn in space with short passes and screens that often.

When we do execute screens they usually go for very big gains.  I think we had like 90 yards on 3 screens yesterday, and one was just a terrible playcall on 3rd and long.

Also, we have played a bunch of Rex Ryan defenses, but keep in mind we're likely going to need to face some combination of SF, SEA, and NO defenses this postseason again. We're only likely to get 1 game against a 'cupcake' D, and Atlanta's D was supposed to be cupcake level and we still struggled.

    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
