Hardy want "big contract he worked for"

He's worth 11 mil so he will get tagged if we can't agree on a contract with him. There's no way we let him walk for nothing instead of paying him that 11 million. After next season we may very well lose him but he's going to be here at least one more season.

I love hardy but don't get carried away. He's not worth top 5 position money. I rather move on without him than be handicapped by him.

I agree we can't afford to break the bank for him, but I can't think of 5 defensive ends who are clearly better.  An argument could be made for Quinn, JJ Watts,  Tuck, and maybe one or two others.  But I would say that he is definitely going to get top 5 money, here or somewhere else.

I wouldn't mind tagging him this year, seeing if his production is similar next year, and then decided on how much of a long term contract to offer.

Franchise him this year while we deal with Cam and some of the other FAs on the team. Keep Hardy's contract for 2015 in mind and save room for it in the moves we make this year.

We can make it happen if we plan this thing right. I hope we will have another amazing Draft as well. The rookie cap really presents a chance to save some money if you use it to draft otherwise expensive positions like LT or CB1.

Franchise tag number for a DE will be devastating to the cap next year. I believe it is 15m+

I don't see Gett signing up for that.

Hope we can get get something done. But he will be able to get more elsewhere with teams like Oakland having $60m+ of cap space.

I hate to suggest this, but if McDermott goes to the Redskins as their head coach and you combine that with the money the Skins have to spend in free agency and their desire to FIX their defense...

Well, don't be shocked if Hardy goes north this offseason.

The only way this deal gets done is if they go the Charles Johnson route and push a lot of the money into a signing bonus. The biggest danger of doing that is that you'll end up with a massive dead money charge if the worst happens and Hardy underperforms the contract or gets injured. It also removes future flexibility. However, if he performs up to the contract (or better) than you can remove that as a position of need for a while and focus draft resources elsewhere.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
