Mea Culpa

Confíteor Huddle omnipoténti
et vobis, fratres,
quia peccávi nimis

I completely underestimated Ron Rivera’s ability to change wholesale. From going to a coach I railed on for flying off the field using the wings of his giant labia, to a coach sporting the largest set of brass balls I have seen since Chris Peterson went for two on a Statue of Liberty play, I couldn't have been more wrong. You have righted your wrongs, Ron. Now I must right mine.

Mea culpa, mea culpa,
mea máxima culpa.

I thought Cam Newton the worst kind of glory hound in the draft, one that wouldn’t put in the work. I saw a QB that would flash for a year or two, open a few themed restaurants in Charlotte or Auburn, and flame out while bouncing from team to team accompanied by a flurry of cheap “what could have been” articles from washed up Sportswriters looking for cheap clicks. Never did I imagine the work he would put in over the next three years to put an entire offense on his back and drag it to an NFC South Title and a playoff spot.

Mea culpa, mea culpa,
mea máxima culpa.

Most of all, I underestimated you, my dear Luke. I thought picking a LB with the 9th overall pick was just the old Hurney mistake of overvaluing any position containing the word “Back”. But you transformed this defense. Gave it an attitude. Yes, the D Line makes it all possible, but you are the heart and soul of what is the heart and soul of this team.

Mea máxima culpa.

Ideo precor beátam

vos, fratres,
oráre pro me ad Zod nostrum.

Amen.

for the love of God, please continue to doubt all our first round picks... its turning out great!

I didn't doubt Kuechly would be a good LB. I doubted a LB could be worth a top 10 pick.

I had the same doubts about Stewart, and unfortunately I was right.

I tremendously underestimated the ability of one Cam Newton when we drafted him.

I thought he was an athlete trying to play QB and even though he had tremendous physical traits, it would take years before we saw a starting calibre QB.

I thought that after his entertainer and icon statement that he would be the type of player who had thought that he had arrived.

What we got was a QB with a hell of a lot more ability in the pocket....who is his own biggest critic....who understands it is all about improving the little things....and who has the work ethic to achieve his goal of being a great QB and football player.

I hate these threads, but one thing I want them to prove...i'll be convinced the panthers are legit if they carry this season's success into next season and not disappear for the next 5 or so like they've historically done.

I'm enjoying the excitement now, but I'm leery of next season.

I never doubted Cam for a second, was really hoping for him in the draft.

I didn't understand the Luke pick at the time but used blind homerism to hope for the best.

And Rivera...I was ready to kick his ass out onto the street after the Buffalo loss.

I never thought Thomas Davis would be able to play again, and was ready to cut ties :-/.

Considering I was researching the draft in early October as my only source of Panther hope/joy, I'm elated with what we have right now.

The only thing that could stop this franchise from years of success is catastrophic injuries.

That's it.

    • It is a tough decision.  There is another factor.  Is he in game shape?  A tired Hunt is not better than an "in-shape" Corbett.  When coming off an injury, it is natural to want to protect the injured area, even if it is completely healed.  This can cause you to contort your body for no reason, lose fundamentals, and it could lead to other injuries.  For example, I had a knee in high school that required getting taped.  That made me aware of the knee (not used to tape on my knee) and I pulled my groin (favoring or dragging the leg with the tape).  The trainer explained the groin injury the way I do here--but scared money makes no money.  If he is cleared to play, he is cleared to play.  Watch him, rotate him in for a series, etc.  Specifically, I would want to watch the matchup--who is winning more--Corbett or Hunt?  How is the defense reacting (if at all) to Hunt being in?  Etc.
    • Shannon was sued for $50 million (settled out of court, I believe) for forcing sex on his girlfriend during a two-year relationship.  He denies it, but ESPN let him go last April.  Chad Johnson's wife filed a police report because he head-butted her in a car and was put on probation. I had to google it.  I watched the Ray Rice video and when you see it, you realize just how vile and cowardly abusing a woman really is.  But for the same point Aussie tried to make, these women are defenseless, and being phyiscally bigger and stronger does not validate your actions.   I can't even stand to watch Steve Smith.  I can't normalize this kind of behavior--again, I do not think R-P had that in mind when he posted this.  When the reason was exposed, we should realize that we are talking life (quality of) and death (in some cases) here.
    • I can respect the fact that we should not glorify or normalize men who have a history of beating women.  I do not think anyone was thinking of that when they posted this, but if head-butting your wife and unconsensual sex (rape) is something you cannot overlook, I agree with that.  I think they are both half-crazed attention hounds regardless of their pasts.
