Even outsiders noted the officiating

This from Mike Pereira, over at Fox Sports:

My overall grade for referee Carl Cheffers and his crew in a real tough game: B-

I say B- because of the inconsistency of the head-butt calls, as well as the roughing-the-passer call made against the 49ers on Cam Newton, who was peeling out of the pocket and was hit with the shoulder to the head area. I don't think that foul should have been called. You also had a play at the end of the first half, when the 49ers had 12 men in the huddle that wasn't called when it should have been, right before Colin Kaepernick completed the go-ahead touchdown pass to Vernon Davis.

There were too many misses by the crew when you get to this point in the playoffs. I do, however, give the officials kudos for working so hard to keep the game under control. They physically got involved, but there were a couple of things that should have been picked up that weren't.

If this game was a B- I would hate to see what his C or even D game was.

Yeah, I'm a niners fan and I thought there were a couple of bad flags. The after the play on mitchell wasn't much of anything. But we had the roughing the passer in second half that wasn't a penalty, but they called it

And Smith picked up Cam and drove him to the ground...WWEEELLLL after the pass and wasn't flagged.  A blatant hit that should have warranted a flag but nothing.

Boldin head butting far worse then 5-8 Munnerlyn.. PLAY AFTER PLAY and nothing.

The refs goal was to take the fire out of Carolina on that first drive.  Two terrible calls giving SF points and putting Carolina on warning that aggressive play from the PANTHERS wasn't going to be allowed.  But ONLY THE PANTHERS.  Niners had free reign to do whatever was necessary.  The officiating showed it.

So what you're saying is all a QB has to do when he's about to get sacked is to place is own helmet in the path of the defender's helmet? Just bend his knees slighly to create the contact?

Rule 12, Section 2, Article 9. Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defenders impermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area.”

Period, end of rule. It doesn't say "unless the QB looks like he's thinking about leaving the pocket, or is turning around, shifts his weight on his left foot."  If you hit the QB in the head or neck, it's a penalty.

This is the same rule it was when Brooks hit Brees in the neck and the 49ers whined it wasn't a penalty. They should have opened a rule book after that.

He admits that there were game changing, score gifting penalties, yet considers that a B-? Ok.

The passer causing a helmet to helmet is NOT the defender using his helmet to hit the passer.

It is a bad call....but they consistantly give any questionable helmet hit to a QB. If Drew Brees is running out of a pocket for his life they would give it to him in a heartbeat. Now Brees is simply trying to stay alive where as Cam likely is turning into a runner....but you can't penalize Cam for it.

They baby QBs....but at least they are consistent with the horrible overprotection

It was a bad call, and at least you acknowledge it. And I would not have flagged Cam for it, obviously. It should have been a no-call.

Refs are told to "err" on the side of caution. Err is short for error. Think about that for a moment. The refs are actually told to ERROR. It sounds like you agree that they've gone too far.

I was at the game BTW. One of the Panthers fans in front of me actually bought me a beer. The one to our left shared his popcorn with us. There was some friendly trash talking but we were all having fun with it. I'm just glad my real life expereience with Panther fans differs entirely from some of the vitriol I see on this forum.

Why are you here? Don't you have Seattle in like 4 days or so? Every Niner fan gets so defensive when we bring this up, it's funny, must be because you know it's true. You KNOW the game was given to you. It's obvious. The best division rivalry and manning/brady makes for a great weekend! smdh

They get a B- because they still created the result that the NFL wanted.  They don't get an A because they made it obvious that the games are fixed.
