Not much. The money doesn't go away. But maybe I'm wrong.

 

 

I remember perhaps a couple of years ago when we were debating on what to do with Chris Gamble, some of us said if he retired vs us releasing him, we would have saved more cap room.  Technically, the players get paid for the years they play. (The only sure thing being the signing bonus)  So I think if they retired, a good bit of space might open up.  Though of course, we don't want Smitty to retire.  Yet I would be able to handle it if a good bit of cap space opened up.

When a player retires, the remaining cap hit is pushed to the next season.

 

I know a lot of people are calling for us to cut Stewart outright, but if we were to do that, the additional cap hit next year would be $12.7 million. Because the way that Hurney structured that deal, we're better off keeping him on the team, whether he plays or not. As for Deangelo, it's not any better. By cutting him, we incur an additional $3.6 million.

 

If instead Stewart retired this offseason, the cap hit would be pushed to 2015, but would still be substantial.

Stewart's contract is a hodgepodge of contract language and bonuses. If the team cuts him, I believe it's the same as declining his option bonus. Same thing would apply for him being traded or retiring(unless it's got offset language).

 

Means his contract values would change going forward starting with this year. He would get a guaranteed salary of roughly 9 million dollars and his cap hit would expand from 5.5 million to 12.3 million.   It might be the worst contract I've ever seen in professional sports. lol  .

      Damn back to 10th. I only caught the last 5 minutes but some of those 3's were horrible lol. In that close of game you can't be launching those many hail mary's when you could be chipping away from the foul line. I guess no one wanted to get in the paint and didn't trust the refs to give them the calls maybe? Gonna watch the highlights to get a better idea of the flow of the game

      I agree.  The Big 12 is a good conference, and he is the swinging dick in that conference.  If Bill Self retires, that sets Kansas back a bit, and Arizona moves even further ahead as the best team in that conference.  Arizona can crush west coast recruiting with USC / UCLA no longer being relevant for LA kids, and Gonzaga not being able to compete moneywise.   If Lloyd comes here, he will be second fiddle to Duke every single year in NIL and recruits.  Not to mention the entire SEC and Big East for kids who want to stay in those regions to play. This is why I keep saying go get Mark Few.  Has proven he can do more with less from an X / O perspective but can also recruit All American players and compete at a high level. He's a god at Gonzaga, but for $9M he'd make the move as that's 4x what he's making at Gonzaga, and makes him the highest paid coach in the country.
