Greg Hardy waiting on phone call, 'crapload' of money

NEW YORK -- Greg Hardy tied a franchise record with 15 sacks for the Carolina Panthers this season. He won't turn 26 until next July. These are the types of guys you want to keep in the building.

That's not assured for the man who calls himself The Kraken. The Panthers have salary cap issues, and the team is well aware Cam Newton's rookie contract is reaching its back end.

Hardy has made it clear he'll be willing to play on the franchise tag (expected to be about $12 million for a defensive end), but general manager Dave Gettleman didn't sound certain keeping Hardy would be financially possible.

Hardy's not losing sleep.

"It's a football game. It's a game, so you really can't put too much stock in stressing about something like that," he told Around The League at Radio Row. "I'm in the best position of my life regardless of what happens, so I definitely believe in letting my agent and my manager and my people handle that and I can focus on football and entertaining you guys."

Speaking of entertaining, we asked what the Panthers need to do to get to the Super Bowl stage next year.

"Give me a phone call and offer me a crapload of money," he said with a grin. "That's all. Nothing too serious."

    • It's definitely a historical issue at QB but to be perfectly blunt, we also don't do a good job of really developing almost any position if you look at the last decade or so. I tend to be on the side of that being far less a development issue than an evaluation deficiency.  I think we are in the situation at QB2/3 recently due to the overall roster being absolutely abhorrent and the QB classes being quite thin. It is harder to justify another Matt Corral(or several) when you can potentially get a real two deep contributor at other positions.  But, it was a lot of hard work to get to the point where are roster is so incredibly bad that luxury picks literally are not in our vocabulary.  This is the reaping what you sow portion of our history.
    • That is what I meant about our front office. They are like someone filling out a March Madness bracket based on preference of uniform colors and mascots. There's no rhyme of reason to some of these fugg'n mind numbing decisions they make.  They go all in on these flimsy-@ss prospects and are gun shy when it comes to more solid prospects.  It's literally maddening and the reason I stopped being so emotionally involved in this team. Heck the only reason I'm active on the board today is one, it's my day off and two, it's cut down time.
