Not totally Panther related, but, I was looking through some archives from their head "scout" Matt Miller, and it is rather funny reading over his grades.

 

Ryan Tannehill, Quarterback, Texas A&M

The Dolphins needed a quarterback, but not this one. Tannehill is a reach at No. 8 and could be the final straw that breaks the camel's back in terms of Jeff Ireland's job security. 

Tannehill is a great guy and a very good athlete, but as a quarterback, he's just OK. We don't like this pick, at all.

Grade: F

 

Luke Kuechly, Inside Linebacker, Boston College

The Panthers needed to go defense, but the smarter pick would have been Stephon Gilmore (CB, South Carolina) or a defensive tackle. The fact that they drafted an inside linebacker has us shaking our heads in the B/R war room.

Kuechly is a good athlete, but the huge gap at defensive tackle won't help this catch-and-tackle type linebacker who lacks the strength to take on blockers and make plays.

Grade: D

 

Bruce Irvin, Defensive End, West Virginia

Well...this isn't good.

The Seattle Seahawks made the Miami Dolphins' reach for Ryan Tannehill at No. 8 overall look like a good pick. Bruce Irvin was graded as a third-round pick. Drafted at No. 15? That's a huge mistake.

The Seahawks also reached last year with James Carpenter at the end of Round 1, and they did it again here with Bruce Irvin. They obviously like Irvin a lot, but they could have traded back to get him.

Grade: F- 

 

Quinton Coples, Defensive End, North Carolina

Quinton Coples' picture above rightly sums up my feelings on this pick.

Coples will fill a need, but with guys like Courtney Upshaw and Melvin Ingram still on the board, the Jets should have addressed the outside linebacker position over the five-technique defensive end.

Coples has amazing athletic potential, but he plays with horrible effort and has questionable football IQ. For a team with a poor reputation and focus already, this is a bad, bad fit.

Grade: F

 

Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

The Browns made a defensive move by trading up one spot to make sure that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could not draft Trent Richardson. With so many picks in this year's class, thanks to the trade with the Atlanta Falcons last year, the Browns were able to sacrifice three late-round picks to move up and get the best back in this class.

You might hear that this is too high for a running back. It's not.

Grade: A+

 

Grade: D

Summary

The Seahawks received our lowest Round 1 grade for their reach to grab Bruce Irvin at No. 15 overall. They messed up again in Round 3 with Russell Wilson after having signed Matt Flynn this offseason. Neither pick makes much sense to us.

Bobby Wagner and Robert Turbin saved the Seattle draft, but two of its first three picks were just bad.

 

 

Still laughing at all of it. I am going to go back later and look at the 2011 grades as well. Yikes.

Selections: QB Cam Newton, DT Terrell McClain, DT Sione Fua

The Panthers reached for Newton, in our opinion, and drafted a player not ready to lead in the NFL right away. Newton was a one-year starter at Auburn and will struggle to adapt to the NFL game early on in his career.

Without a second-round pick due to a 2011 trade with the Patriots, the Panthers are left waiting until Round 3 to find a defensive tackle to anchor a very young defensive line.

Terrell McClain is a good option as a three-technique defensive tackle.

Sione Fua is a nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. He will be able to line up next to McClain and give the Panthers a solid one-two punch at tackle.

Keep in mind I get REALLY bored at work sometimes. Well before the start of last season I watched the BR NFC South preview video. (Having watched everything else.) This turd was on a panel of 3. Don't remember who the other guy was that agreed with him but when they got to the Panthers he made a snide comment about Luke not deserving DROY. Other guy jumped in and they kinda did the whole "Don't even get me started on that topic" 

So basically everything that comes out of this guys mouth is a bunch of poo.

I tend to look at sites like BR and Walterfootball just to get exposure to names that I didn't know about, not actually see who is projected to us in later rounds.

In fairness to the BR:

 

Many Huddlers were irate when we drafted Kuechly. 

At the time,there were statements made that many on here probably agreed with.

 

20/20 hindsight. 

 

I was upset when we drafted Jon Beason.  I got excited when we nabbed Dwayne Jarrett in the second round.  And I was certiain I knew the needs and market.

Everyone is totally wrong sometimes. This is not exclusive to BR, a place where the average Joe can have their opinions published. Just like the Huddle has good posters and bad posters, the BR has good writers and bad writers---great analysts and terrible analysts.  You have to pick and choose what has value to you, and disregard the rest (kind of like choosing threads). Even still, sometimes knowledgeable people can totally whiff on scouting prospects and projections. It's just the nature of the beast.

As for Cam, everyone including here was wrong about him except the Panthers organization and me, of course. I knew this guy would be a beast from a youtube clip, then I followed him in FL then Blinn and I was excited when he got his chance to play division 1 at Auburn. The kid was money on every level.

I am so certain of this that if he is the Panthers' starting quarterback in 2016, I will buy a Cam Newton jersey and stand in the stadium parking lot in my underwear when the Panthers come to Tampa Bay and hold a sign proclaiming that Auburn rules over Florida and Carolina rules over Tampa Bay.

 

 

Someone needs to make sure this butt-wipe actually does this.

 

Let's ask Denver Broncos fans if they would like to trade The Golden Calf of Bristol for Newton straight up. They would laugh in your face. Football fans know even if the experts have no clue.

      No you dont.  He had all those records for years before his final season. Whether career or season he had them all years before his final season in which he played 6 games.

      Williams covered for Moore by saying they were on the wrong page about Moores specific route. Williams could have easily covered for him by saying he messed up. Suggesting only 1 route was ever intended to be a viable target is absurd.

      I am going to agree with Linville this time--I think we need to get a veteran edge (We have Jones II, Scourton, and Princely--2 developmental guys and a decent veteran).  We don't really think of Jones because he had a hamstring injury weeks 3 and 4 and a back that required surgery Week 6-17.  He still managed 10 pressures, and he will be 28.  Princely Umanmielen only played in approximately 18-20% of the snaps and he struggled at times.  Basically, he was a situational pass rusher.  He got 1.5 sacks and 10 pressures.  He should improve, but for now, he is what he is.  Scourton gives us hope.  For a rookie (and thanks to Jones II's injuries, he was given more PT), he had 8 sacks--and held the edge.  He played at a first-round draft pick level.  He has the potential to become "that guy" in 2026. We lose Wonnum, who played nearly 700 snaps and amassed 3 whole sacks.  For a person raised a Gamecock, I would not be upset if we purged our roster of all South Carolina alumni.   However, I see it this way:  Wonnum was decent holding the edge, something Patrick Jones II and Scourton have demonstrated at a high level.  He is a liability, if you ask me.    Jones had 7 sacks one season in Minnesota and is known for his inside rushing ability--not what you would call a speed rusher.  I think Princely was a bit disappointing, but he was a bit raw.  Out of college, they described him as being a bit predictable.  I see no reason he will not improve in 2026 and become a situational pass rusher.   Basically, with Scourton and Princely expected to continue to develop and Jones II returning from injury, I think we need another veteran (if we can get a good one) to give us balance and depth.  A third developmental player is not ideal.   Draft:  OT, LB, WR, OL depth, S. Free Agency:  Edge, possibly a WR;  re-sign Mays, Cuhran, BC (??), and Nijman.  Let walk:  Wonnum, Scott, Dowdle.  I see about $20m per year after signing the OL depth.  Spend it on a veteran edge.   Players like Reddick (Tampa), Bosa (Buffalo), Khalil Mack (LAC) could be available on a one or two year deal in the $15m range.  We could splurge here, but I think a veteran situational pass rusher (depending on Jones II's back) is all we need while our 2 young guns develop.
