Jason Verrett Scheduled to Have Private Workout With Panthers Friday

Just a few notes from JV's highlights...

He's a really good player but his obvious lack of height and length (which will get exposed in the NFL, unless he plays off-coverage) is a concern. His tackling ability is also a huge concern, he stands up when he tackles and usually hits up high. A guy at 5'9 is not going to be able to bring down 6'3 wide receivers by hitting them up high, it's just not going to happen. He also doesn't have that great of a backpedal and that's seen when he comes out of the backpedal way to early (side note: one of Fuller's strengths is his back pedal). Also stat wise, a lot of his interceptions came off really poor throws. If you look at Fuller's highlight rig you actually see how smart he is... he's running routes and then making plays on the ball better than the receivers.

In my opinion, Fuller's only negatives is tendency to struggle in zone coverage (which can be taught), his over-aggresiveness (which isn't always a bad thing, and the fact that he isn't an elite athlete; however makes up for that by being a super smart player.

Verrett is actually a better tackler than what youre making it out to be.

Both are good players. Love to have either one. My problem is again, imo one is a 1st rounder and the other is a 2nd. Plus, Verrett fits our zone d.

Do love how Fuller runs the route for the receivers and his height.

Theres only two tall corners who are actually physical in the NFL today.

You guys really need to tell me who these are tall corners are bc I cant figure it out.

I would say Peterson, Browner, and Sherman are three of the most physical corners in the NFL... then you have the 5'11 guys (average height for an NFL corner) who are also really physical (i.e. Joe Haden and Darrelle Revis (pre-Buc).

I would be perfectly fine with a 5''11 physical corner, but 5'9 is cutting it really close when that corner is going to have to go up against Vincent Jackson and Julio Jones 4 times out o the 16 games.

panthers had several private meetings that went public with Kawaan as well. not a fan of his size, but he is a decent prospect. bigger fan of Roby actually, im just glad that we are finally getting news on workouts and meetings.

I think verrett is much better than roby, I find roby a bit overrated

Verrett didnt just all of a sudden rise after the combine. Ive been high of him since last year and mentioned his name on more than one occasion. My very mock of the 2013 season had Verrett and now have gone back to him with my most recent one.

I like Fuller but Im just not in love with him. You really need to go back and watch cutups of both guys and let me know what you see. I see a 1st round talent in Verrett and 2nd rounder in Fuller. Some wont disagree with me but Fuller almost seem like he could play safety in the NFL. Thats not a knock on him.

Fuller is arguably the best CB in man-to-man in this draft and that is something we definitely need.  He comes from a proven defensive system that translates well into the NFL and I view him better than Flowers coming out of school.  I don't see what people don't see in Fuller.

He's not my #1 choice at 28 but strictly at CB, he's the best fit for us imo.

I will agree 100%, Verrett is the better fit (which might make him more valuable) and I think we are also on the same page that we desperately need corner help as well.

My only notion is that we don't run more man simply because we don't have the personnel (i.e. Josh Thomas getting beat by Kearse).

I have to disagree. Imo Dennard is the best man corner and Fuller behind. But, thats the point we dont need a press corner. Lovie Smith said that you dont need great corners to play cover 2.

I do like the Fuller and Flowers comparison tho if thats what you were going for. Kudo.

I agree.

I love to have a press corner here. Never said I didnt want one. Just saying corner is a need, Verrett is high on my board, and would be a better fit.

    • Not sure who said it first, but Tepper is the correct answer. Still, I'm gonna go with Kasay keeping it inbounds. If, you subscribe to the butterfly effect version of time travel consequences.... When we win SBXXXVIII everybody's lives change: Moose never breaks his leg, We win it all again in 05. Tommy Jone is unknown and Peppers stays home, Champs once more 2008. No artificial pig heart turning JR into a creepy weirdo, no lockout, no Clausen. Fox and Jake ride off into the sunset on their own terms. No 2-14, no #1 pick. But, no laptop, no Blinn, 3 years behind The Golden Calf of Bristol, we still get Cam. JR let's him grow his locs like he always wanted, Smitty sees Cam in a new light. Dreads swinging, (and Smitty with his 3 Lombardis behind him) Cam is old enough to get those calls. No Manning narrative, Cotchery TD, PI against Talib on Philly Brown, 10,000 RTP calls and Kony Ealy SB50 MVP. No Jeans Fridays, no Tepper. KB doesn't slip on his own meatsweat mid-route in SD, Cam becomes the 1st QB to win 10 straight SBs. Retiring after being elected 47th president of the US of A, Cam ushers in the Permanent Proletarian Revolution across the globe, Xi Jinping bows in awe. "ẄøŘƙƐṛ§ őF ŧĤə ŵØRłð, ŮŊÏŦƐ!!!"
    • Yeah your right the owner was copping hand shandies while all this was going down
    • I mean not surprised the Patriots took him in and aren't trying to push him out. They've been the most morally bankrupt team in the NFL for a long while. Wouldn't be surprised if Vrabel has his own dirt on Kraft/Brady and other assholes from that organization over the last couple decades.
