That's silly. No one here has said that they don't like G-man, they just suggested that he adapt to the situation for the overall betterment of the team like he asks of his players.  No need to overpay, but we can all be mature and up front about the situation without letting the media take a scrap and run with it like a crazed dog.

As was posed to me, do you really believe that Gross actually likes Gettleman? Really? **in deep voice** Really? **in deeper voice**

Um, who cares? I feel like you keep trying to counter argue and downplay the importance of the bigger point here. It's important to be sentimental, but not to the point of detrimence and only when you've earned it. Maybe he should have worded his words about smitty at the combine a bit better, but in all honesty, who cares? Hurney was too sentimental with his job, and in this business that almost never produces consistent results. Why do you think JR hired someone like gettleman? Someone with massive personnel experience who's worked in New York, the most cut throat city on earth, for some 10 years? Winning > Niceness in sports whether we like it or not. Just ask Belichick. His job is to build a winner not make best friends with the players. We'll see if he can, but so far it's working out. Stop worrying about whether the players like him or not, that bears nothing on the performance of the team.

yes.

pardon me if i don't buy into all this petty little contrived drama.

it's not hard to believe that after years of good ol buddy hurney who gets fired and who you might consider the scapegoat for bad seasons because he's your buddy and he's always been your GM, you get a new guy...ANY new guy, esp. with a completely different personality, and you are naturally going to be scepitcal and maybe "not like" the guy.

but it's also not hard to believe that after seeing how he operates and that he's an actual football guy, but also very transparent in his dealings...and you see the results of his wheelings and dealings in getting out of that cap hell we were in, that you might start to dislike the guy less and...dare i say...even like him.

but hey...we're talking about junior high mindsets here who decide if they are going to like or unlike someone right away and NEVER have to change their minds because they were right the first time, unless you wait years for them to work their way back into your good graces.

the media loves stirring drama like this up and making mountains out of mole hills. and you know why they do that? because morons always buy that crap.

Sure most people may not care, but some do.  If any point is being downplayed, it's the fact that you can run an NFL franchise without publicly stepping on players' toes. This is especially true as it pertains to fan favorites and franchise legends, no less. The Hoody keeps all his negotiations in house. Nobody said that you had to be nice, just professional, respectful and hopefully tactful in your public relations. I've stated that I love G-man, and the way that he goes about his business, but no one is perfect. In the end, I would desire that he not alienate players or stars with his mouth in the future, but if he does I guess I'll shake my head and take the good with the bad. But I'm not gonna pretend that talking too much in matters of contractual and personnel changes are a good thing if it's not. People can be naive all they like, but the league is watching, players are watching, and free agents are watching. It does matter how the organization is perceived to treat its players, coaches, (and even fans in some respects).  Ultimately it all can affect the performance of the team. In my opinion, to say anything less is just being shortsighted and simplistic. That is what is being downplayed.

pretty much this..."like him"...."don't like him"....who cares?

job number one is make the team better. to make sure you have the right coach and the right players and you fit those right players under the tight budget you are left with.

it doesn't matter if the players like the guy who decides if they have a job or not. it doesn't hurt if they do, but it's not going to matter. you do your job well and try to have reasonable expectations of salary and stay flexible in that regard and you should keep your job.

    • Malcom Spence is the best player remaining, hope he’s there.
    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
