Everson Griffin gets 5 years 42.5 million

How is CJ overpaid? I can't comprehend how a player, who has done nothing but perform consistently great for us isn't worth his contract?

I for one am glad, that we paid him what he imo deserved.

I think that they are all overpaid, but that's the way it is (and another story). Anyway...

We never have to question CJ's competitiveness or ability to consistently do his job, and that's what I love about him.  People seem to be letting a relatively minor injury last season cloud their judgment as to how important C.J.'s presence really is, especially as it relates to Hardy's game which unfortunately hasn't been as big as his mouth when it comes to consistently dominating the opposition.

He will do it, but he won't be a fan favorite while doing it! Look at it this way....we have 30mil this year tied up in our top 2 DEs! Go look at what we could have with that 30mil. We would be a better team!

people forget that we've had two big contracts to DE's before.

Gettleman has made ut clear that Hardy is part of the puzzle.

he'll be 28 before the season starts.

That gives him 2 to 4 years before decline, IMO.

So far, CJ has been lucky with no major injuries.

I wouldn't want to bet that it remains that way.

Now he can always prove me wrong. I wouldn't mind.

excellent points.

It means Greg Hardy is likely just being mortgaged for 2013.  Next offseason his 13 million cap number comes off the books, he walks, and the team extends Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly.  Hardy is going to command an insane contract if he puts up another 15 sack year.

Justin Tuck got his extension after a season where he started 2(!!!) games for the giants. CJ got his contract after an 11.5 sack season where he was by far the best player on our defensive line.

And by using your logic every player in the league is waaaay overpaid, but the grossly underpaid.

And btw CJ earns 12 a year, tuck earned 6. How is that almost 10?

I was comparing what they both would be most likely making this coming year! My bad on the confusion!

Hardy should be part of the puzzle! Rather keep hardy over CJ! 30mil in cap space on two guys! Successful teams don't do that! I don't envy Gman cause his work is cut out for him

It's not the fan base I'm worried about. It's other GMs who don't seem to subscribe to G-man's philosophy.  The past and the present seem to be merging---meaning: the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Devil is apparently not in the details anymore. The way that we're going to have to succeed is by G-man's ability to eek out talent consistently, and be lucky enough to take advantage of that window of opportunity where ancillary pieces are getting "underpaid" in support of the "overpaid" core who has to be consistently rock-solid.

G-man wants to build and support a state-sponsored military among a growing world of mercenaries.

Those are the GM's that are always trying to catch up to the top teams.  Gettleman's philosophy is in line with the teams that are consistently among the top of the league.  Smart GM's have to pick and choose where to spend their money based on actual performance, they don't pay for emotion or loyalty and the hope that at some point a player will realize their potential despite years of disappointment.

IMO, that's why it always seems that the good teams seem to be able to bring in good talent at a supposed discount.  In reality, those players, and their agents, know that if they want to be a part of a competitive team, they need to accept what is closer to their true value.  However, if they just want as big a paycheck as they can get, they go to a bottom feeder that is desperate to appear they are doing something positive...even though it's usually just a façade.

I don't want this to degrade to a Hardy vs C.J. thread, but please don't underestimate CJ's importance to the line, or anyone else's really.

But for an injury, C.J.'s numbers could very well have been better than Hardy's.  Furthermore, don't underestimate C.J.'s push and ability to disrupt. He has been our most consistent D-lineman for years, not just a season.

For real? He is waaay overpaid! Look at what Tuck has been making! Sorry, CJ is not better than Tuck! Just as good, maybe but not almost 10mil a year better

I don't know if you really believe this or not, but if so this is waaayyy off the mark.  I like Tuck, but CJ is one of the best and most complete DE's in the league.  I think statements like this shows just how underappreciated he is, even within our own fan base.
