Rivera says Cam wasn't consulted in WR moves

First, Newton wasn't consulted on the decision to release Smith. He also wasn't consulted on whether the Panthers should try to re-sign Brandon LaFell (Patriots), Ted Ginn Jr. (Cardinals) or Domenik Hixon (Bears).

Newton was in the Caribbean when everything transpired and had no idea any the transactions occurred until he returned to Charlotte to have an MRI on his left ankle, which led to surgery that will force him to miss the next four months.

His reaction?

"Surprised," Rivera said

...

As for speculation that Newton's relationship with Smith led to the release, Rivera made it clear it wasn't.

"It's all speculation," he said. "People are going to write, think and say what they think and don't know. But that had nothing to do with what we did. What we did was all about football.

I've been defending every move made thus far but this one is unacceptable in my opinion. Cam deserved better than to be blindsided by this news. I'm not saying we shouldn't have made the moves but at minimum he deserved the heads up and a brief outline of the plans moving forward. This is a bummer.

Brady was surprised and disappointed that the Pats let Welker go. He then proceeded to put on his big boy pants and lead his team to the playoffs....again..just like Cam will.

I swear some of you think that an NFL franchise is more like a soap opera or sorority than a business.

Disagree, he a player, not a personnel guy. The GM is the guy ruining the show.

I have no problem with this. Cam has enough in his plate with going to school, having surgery and preparing for next season.

Well here's the thing. He's a player until he's not. He can sign with another team or retire when his contract has ended.

Also, I guess this ends the speculation that Cam wanted Smith gone, or that Cam needed him to leave to become a leader (this is the opposite of leading).

Well when wrestling fans grow up, football is the next likely spot to fill the gap.  In essence it is a bit like a soap opera for men.  It has become this way because of the sensationalist media and the NFL's successful attempt to become year round.  When the games aren't being played its time to crank up the drama!  Think about it you've got it all, money, sex, drugs, violence, crime, arrests, court room battles, corporate press releases, primetime events etc etc....  Sounds like the TV at my grandma's house every afternoon when i was a kid.

    • damn I wish somebody would sign him. This has been going on for weeks.    I think if the team wanted to sign him we probably would have heard something about interest on our part.    Or any TE. It looks like they have set that room. And we have taken guys two years running, a guy like this would be blocking them. We need to see if they have it or not. And we should see if Tremble is gonna ever do anything.      In general, with the TEs
    • Dude, there aren’t rose colored glasses big enough for you to call this “not a bad draft.” BC was not a good pick. He was taken with the 6th pick in round 3 and he’s been a backup OL. Tremble also wasn’t a win. Another 3rd rounder who’s easily replaced. Only reason either of them started games is because of injuries or a lack of a better starter. Chuba’s got heart but he’s had one solid year behind a solid run blocking unit. Other than that he’s underwhelmed and like we saw with Dowdle and Foreman, it’s not hard to find cheap pickups who perform as well. Horn has been a good starter but honestly that draft had so many solid starters we could have taken. With as many picks as we had, him and Chuba is absolutely a bad draft. We needed OL and BC and Brown was a terrible effort. You clearly didn’t watch the Senior Bowl if you thought Brown had a chance in the NFL. The huddle draft folks wanted Humphrey and Smith and instead we got crap and Mahomes was the winner.
