Brian Strickland of panthers.com gives ideas in computerized mock

top dawg

This mock is geared towards the O-line.  I guess that's why it's being hated.  Not sexy enough, I guess. But if Cam is going to stay upright, I  wouldn't complain.  Adams is a good prospect with good hands.  Hazel would be the guy that helps stretch the field.

I don't care about going O-line heavy. I won't be upset if only 1 WR is picked.

I just don't like the players or where they were picked.

Our OL is bad, but having two career #3 WRs (at best) as your starters, in my mind, necessitates that the first pick (or two) be a WR.

I could be very wrong, but IMO, you're a lot more likely to find a solid OL starter deep in the draft than a WR that would make a significant impact as a rookie.

Diddy, EVERYBODY worth listening to has said that this draft is as deep at WR as they have seen in years upon years.  Now unless all these analysts, coaches, scouts and GMs are just wrong, then I have to think that someone will emerge as more than a No. 3 as late as the 4th round, and possibly the 5th. So, at best we will be able to not only find a go-to guy, but another receiver with WR-2 upside. T.Y. Hilton was a 3rd round receiver a couple of years ago. Keenan Allen was a 3rd round receiver last year. If there is something there, then G-man will find it in from the 3rd-5th.

As for starting and making an immediate impact, to be honest we probably need an O-lineman or two to make more of an immediate impact.  The way we run our offense, we won't need probably more than one rookie to make a "significant" impact. I suspect that McNutt and/or King will be balling this year ("balling" as much as one can in a Shula-led offense). And hopefully, B-Will finally gets on the field and makes some plays with consistency.

You can hit the link for alternate prospects, but here is your spoiler:

1. Morgan Moses, T

2. Devante Adams, WR

3. Billy Turner, T

4.Will Sutton, DT

5. Chris Watt, G

6. Bene Benwikere, CB

7. Matt Hazel, WR

That's a decent draft, especially the first three, but I think that we go a different way in the 4th.

I could live with that draft.

Even the top OL picks struggle as rookies. WR have a lot better chance to come in and contribute IMO. Even if our WRs aren't top notch, they should be able to get open as coverage breaks down with an OL that gives Cam time. Not to mention Shula drawing up long drawn out pass plays last season and should he do that again...we need a line that doesn't collapse in two seconds.

We may have two career #3 WRs right now...but as long as Byron Bell and a random nobody are protecting Cam...it won't matter if we have Cooks, Benjamin, or even Smitty in his prime to throw to. The first pick more than likely will, and should be, OT for me. No OL...no run game, no time for Cam, no time for WRs to get open.

I like picks 1-3.  Not saying they would be the best option though.  And the rest of the draft I'm just not a fan of.

Davante is awesome and Turner would be strong as well but I'd rather go Fuller in the first.

I like the 1st 4 rounds.

Two good OT and a good WR, all that can start next year.

Will Sutton in the 4th would be crazy, he would definitely be BPA. Hardy, CJ, Star, KK and Sutton would be an unstoppable  DL.

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
