McNabb weighs in on our lack of a threat at WR (via D. Newton)

I can see some hate coming regarding Donovan McNabb's comments in David Newton's latest, but it's not like they are outlandish...at all.  The draft is going to be very important to us in regards to getting Cam a couple of legit weapons.  I go back and forth in my mind about O-line vs wide-out.  David Newton uses McNabb's on words about his experience being without a legit go-to guy for more years than not.

"Oh, I would be worried,'' McNabb told ESPN.com on Wednesday before South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney began his pro day. "First of all, I didn't have a top wide receiver until pretty much T.O. [Terrell Owens] got there.

"For him, I'm just wondering what they are doing to build around him? You lose Brandon LaFell, you lose Steve SmithTed Ginn [Jr.'s] gone. All you have at this point is Greg Olsen.''

And, like I have said before: If Olsen is the best we have to offer, then we are going to keep falling short.  I love what Olsen brings to the table as a role player, but our offense should not rely on Greg Olsen being the "top dog".

He respects the opinions of Carolina coach Ron Rivera and defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, who were with him during parts of his career in Philly.

"But you've still got to give him some help,'' he said of Newton. "The quarterback is only as good as the people around him. If you don't ever want him to throw to a player that can create big plays out of the passing game, it's not going to go well.''

And to Rivera's argument that the Panthers don't have to have a bona fide No. 1 receiver to be successful, McNabb simply rolled his eyes.

"I hate when teams [say] that,'' McNabb said. "Who are they, Bill Belichick and the Patriots now?'

No, we're not the Pats.

"[A receiver] doesn't have to be considered a No. 1, but in their offense you need a top dog,'' McNabb said of Carolina. "We've seen what Steve Smith can do in that offense. We've seen how LaFell has been able to get catches off of Steve Smith.

"What are they going to get them off? Jerricho Cotchery? What was Jerricho Cotchery in Pittsburgh? A No. 4? A 3?''

McNabb's compelling argument is kinda swinging me back to the WR side of the equation.  I know that it's going to come down to BPA in the draft, but what are we going to do when it comes down to Benjamin or OBJ or Moses?  What should we do?

McNabb said that? Pack it up, seasons already over, better not even play the games.

I am sure some Skins fan was making a sarcastic remark about McNabb's comments about RGIII being the media darling, all full of himself. The thing is, McNabb was spot on.

He is probably spot on here as well.  Thank goodness we have the draft in order to "fix" our receiving corps before his "warning" turns into reality.

The difference is is that he is coming from personal experience (from the perspective of a mobile QB who had a pretty good long ball, I might add).

I understand, but it seems like DM and others in the media think we can just get anybody we want at the moment. It gonna take time to fix the Hurney Hell we are in and they don't remember that  or don't want to remember.

I am not a conspiracy buff at all, but it seems like the media wants Cam out of Carolina and they will repeat this crap until he is gone.

The "Cam can't succeed without top tier talent like Donald Lafell and Ted fuging Ginn" crowd is getting about as annoying as Teebow fans.

Gettleman believes Cam can make people better. He's going to find some late round gems and it might take a year, but we will put together a solid WR corps. Then we can go win all those Super Bowls like McNabb and TO did.

    • See my previous post. You're also leaving out that T-Mac was likely hitting a rookie wall, like 95% of rookies do late in their first season, combined with the added attention on him by defenses, which in turn would be why Bryce looked Coker's way down the stretch.  With Coker playing like that to start next year, defenses will have to pay attention to it, which will then also make things easier for T-Mac. All of which is also ignoring that T-Mac will just be a better player next year than he was this year, assuming he works on his game this offseason, which we all know he will be.  If a player who was already your clear cut #1 comes back even better his next season, you're going to make sure you're throwing it his way more often, no matter who else you have. Again, Coker's added targets won't be at the expense of T-Mac's, they will BOTH be taking targets from the rest of the team.  Not to mention, we should be passing it more next year to begin with, seeing as we'll have both of them hopefully ready to go full speed Week 1, which again, will help both their target totals increase. Coker looks like a really good player, but even the most optimistic person can't say he looks like he has #1 potential, he has very solid to maybe even high end #2 potential.  You're not taking targets away from the reigning OROY who looks like a true Top 15 WR already to get your #2 targets, you increase both of them by taking from the others.
    • Need to crush the hawks tonight. A lose would really damage momentum
    • Sorry, but this is a terrible breakdown that doesn't at all show what you're trying to say/project about T-Mac next year, as it leaves out key information that changes everything, it makes the opposite point that you're trying to. Chase missed 5 games that second season after playing all 17 as a rookie (and still saw more targets that second season). Puka it looks like you projected his stats out to a 17 game season (as he only played 11 games), but even still , when you have 160+ targets as a rookie, there isn't really much room to get any more the next year. Waddle saw an increase in yards, and sure, his targets went down, but he played on a team with a better WR that year who saw 170 targets for 1,710 yards during that 2nd season for Waddle... something T-Mac doesn't have to contend with on the same team (280+ targets for their top 2 WRs, if you don't think T-Mac would see more than 122 targets if him and Coker combined for 287, then you're nuts). Then Olave and Wilson both saw an increase of 19 targets in their second season. You basically just laid out the reasoning for why T-Mac should see at least 20 more targets next year, if not more, which would be a solid increase and put him easily into the Top 10 most targeted WR next season.
