Smith is old, publicly stated that he wouldn't take a pay cut, had a very high cap number for his skill set, and we needed to get younger at WR.

Yes, let's just ignore the fact that Getts had publicly said Cam is the franchise QB

 

What did you expect him to say and keep his job? He also said, "...the time to win is now."

 

But he promptly followed up his remarks by allowing every receiver who's ever caught a Cam Newton pass to leave. And no one would ever believe anyone in NFL team management talks out both sides of their mouths.
