With these one year deals won't we be in the same situation we were this year next year if these guys out perform their contracts.

yes. but if we still wind up getting into the playoffs and having a 10+ win season again, we might have stumbled onto something. if we can pay our core players and rent cheap players looking to prove themselves with one year deals, we might end up drawing better and better players who know that if they perform well and help us win, they'll get a good sized contract somewhere.

it's not ideal or conventional, but if it works.....

I think that is the point.

Fill holes and draft well. Aim to fill those holes up with your draft pics over time. Get your cap in order and you can then fill some holes with a higher level FA when the right situation comes up.

Building through the draft for the long term, and adding role players short term through FA. It's not a foreign concept. We were never able to successfully build through the draft the way we should have when Hurney was GM. It's why we didn't sniff the playoffs for five years.

New England for example has had success plugging in pieces. I think this will be the new normal for us. If Gettleman drafts well year in and year out who cares. Keep the core and fill in as needed. Marty didnt get that. He wanted to keep everyone and couldnt draft outside the first round.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
