Why didn't they just retire the numbers

Assuming all owners are in on it. Owners probably make more money when the Lakers are good than they would if their own team is good so why wouldn't they be cool with the bigger markets always getting the breaks

Agreed. I don't think most teams tank. The one team that I think DEFINITELY tanked was the Colts on their "suck for Luck" campaign.

I don't think we have ever tanked. Dumping big contracts when you think the season is pretty much over, in order to reset, is different from tanking.

Of those small markets none have won insane odds to jump up in lotto picks except the oilers..... The Hurricanes, and Predators and to a lesser extent Calgary and the blues have been competitive by DRAFTING extremely well later on.

As bad as things have been around this team over the years. At least we aren't the Falcons.

I don't really think the NHL is rigged though. Plenty of small market teams are competitive. Carolina, St Louis, Edmonton, Calgary, Nashville. I think the Rangers genuinely got lucky, but they've had plenty of bad years. Pittsburgh is going through a rebuild, Detroit, and Chicago are all struggling.

Yeah I don't get guys who have that much to prove not playing. The general approach to the preseason the last 2 years ha not been impressive IMO. Go play the young guys because it's just practice for fugs sake.
