REPORT: Joel Bitonio will be the pick at 28

Back on April 23rd I first reported Joel Bitonio as a prime target for the Carolina Panthers in round one. That’s becoming clearer as a number of team executives have penned Bitonio to Carolina at pick 28. I’m told the San Diego Chargers at number 25 will also consider Bitonio. There’s a feeling Carolina could attempt to trade up for a receiver or offensive tackle, should one fall. The obvious trade partner is the Miami Dolphins whom I’m told will entertain offers for the 19th pick if Zach Martin is unavailable. Carolina would assure themselves receiver Brandin Cooks or Marquise Lee, whichever is available. If that’s the case Bitonio could then land with the Seattle Seahawks as the first round closes out.

Would not mind, as long as the OT drafted isn't Moses or CK then I'm fine. Bitonio actually has the skill set to start day 1 and do well in both run blocking and pass protection.

I also would love trading up for Cooks, not so much for Lee though.

Strengths

Plays with vinegar and seeks to bury defenders -- nasty finisher who runs his feet on contact and consistently blocks defenders off the screen. Extremely tough and durable. Highly versatile -- can play any position on the line. Outstanding personal character and football character -- work ethic, leadership and responsibility are all exemplary. Produced the best 10-yard split (1.69 seconds) and 20-yard split (2.80) of any offensive lineman at the combine.

Weaknesses

Tends to shoot his hands wide and needs to improve placement -- too grabby. Slips off blocks and could stand to play more under control. Operated heavily out of a 2-point stance and might need to get acclimated to playing with his hand in the dirt. Average knee bend in pass protection.

Draft Projection

Round 2

Bottom Line

An undersized college left tackle who projects best to the inside in the pros. Displays the tenacity, leg drive and mean streak that is highly coveted by OL coaches and could drive up his draft status. Could require some initial patience moving inside, yet possesses the skill set, intelligence and desire to successfully convert.

    • This season only ends one way... We win this Sunday. Bryce is decent. We take back 1st place...   Only to then get our brakes blown off in the last two weeks.
    • Here's one of the most maddening things, that will be shown in full light over the next three weeks. The same people around here that called Darnold a bum and Mayfield a washed up over draft are also the ones saying Bryce is a catastrophe. Yeah, and I've been one who said Bryce wasn't big enough, brave enough or capable enough. I said back in the day that Darnold had a lot of fight in him and got shouted down. And on Mayfield, heck I didn't know, I just knew we had a very, very bad team that was run terribly. But I saw both of those guys go out there and resurrect their careers and be play-off bound since shaking the Carolina clay dust off their cleats. And we sat there and cat called their cars as they pulled out of the parking lot, laughing at what nobodies they were. Over the next three weeks, those two guys may just serve us sh!t sandwiches and then settle down to their just desserts. And then we'll probably let Bryce go off into the realm of other teams. And when that happens, will we see him coming back, better than before and we're left to re-sit this cycle all over again? Same naysayers, same results, same revolving carousel of ponies and pundits?  Will we end up looking like the Temu version of the San Diego Chargers back in the day watching Drew Brees come to fruition in the previously moribund Superdome while we whiff on a Manning pick just to be jilted for Phillip "Always a Bridesmaid" Rivers?
