I was naive enough to think these Panther fans did not exist anymore

Last night I had an interesting back and forth with a guy we'll call Michael Procton. (@MichaelProcton)

He blurted into a discussion I was having with a PFF guy about Cam's 2013 improvement.

At first I assumed he was just some angry Alabama troll, or maybe a Saints fan.

After doing a quick twitter search, I found that the guy is a big Panthers fan.  Yet he has an eerie disdain for Cam Newton, going back before we even drafted him.

Going back to Cam's rookie year, the guy actually made an argument that Clausen had a better preseason and should have been starting. He wishes we had drafted Dalton instead of Cam.  Even Darin Gant called him out on it.

So that brings me to the question: do you know any diehard Panther fans that despise our franchise quarterback?

I know a guy from work like that. He likes the panthers but can't stand cam. He is a GIANT ecu fan so maybe that explains his lack of good judgment!

Whoa now, there are dumbasses across all NC campuses... Specifically the athletes at UNC...

But not all ECU fans are that stupid.

Not a lot of Panthers fans around me, but there is an inordinate amount of unfounded Cam Newton hate from fans of every other team in my area.

Except my little brother, god bless him. He's this close to switching team alliances from the Raiders to the Panthers because he likes Cam Newton so much.

I even caught him playing as the Panthers on Madden. And not online either, as an offline franchise. Busted.

Yeah just read a comments section on any Panthers article, or check out the Panthers facebook page.

A lot of NFL fans can't accept the idea of the athletic quarterback and sometimes its sad to say but some don't believe in black quarterbacks still. These people believe that the traditional drop back statue quarterback is the only way to win games even with a guy like russell wilson proving them wrong.

One of my good friends decided he was going to boycott the Panthers after we drafted Cam because he felt like it was a wasted pick since we had just invested a 2nd on Clausen. He must have also been boycotting when Clausen was playing to think drafting another QB was a waste of a pick. I have not, and probably will not, ever let him forget about it.

My daughter's pre-k teacher is a cowboys fan that used to be a panther fan before they drafted Cam. She said to me once that she'd still be a panther fan if it wasn't for our quarterback. I literally just stared at her without saying anything and turned and walked out of the room. I talk to the teaching assistant instead if I ever need anything.

    • Facts it's still crazy that they made him sell over that especially considering what some of the other owners have done.  JR was a rich 80 year old white man from the south I'm not at all surprised about him making some "inappropriate" comments about what a woman is wearing water is wet what a surprise. That's just the way things were done during his time, and he should and did get punished for his actions by paying some hefty fines, but it definitely wasn't something that he should've been forced to sell his team over.  I'll never forget him insulting Peyton Manning during a negotiation, reportedly belittling the quarterback’s knowledge of player safety and asking, “Do I need to help you read a revenue chart, son?
    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
