Hopefully we're done drafting dumb players.

Indiana newspaper:

"Purdue's Kawann Short wasn't about to break a graduation promise to his mother.

...

his mother wanted to see him graduate, and the last thing he wanted to do was disappoint her. That pretty much ensured he wouldn't give up his senior year to enter the NFL draft.

“She said, 'I can't wait to see you walk across that stage.' I said, 'Anything to make you happy.' That was my No. 1 goal.”

...

“He kept a promise to his mother and I really admire that about him,” (Purdue coach Danny) Hope said.

...

(Short said:) “I have to be that guy everybody depends on. I have to set a good example of being that best role model and the best big brother anybody could have. Not let things get to me. Stay out of trouble. Basically, stay humble"

it's just rare for a football player (especially drafted in the first three rounds) to go back to school.

we have 3 on our roster that i know of.

Nice.  I wasn't necessarily talking about degrees, but mainly smart people that will be able to understand the playbook.  Especially later round draft picks that don't quite have the athletic ability compared to the early round guys.  Their ability to learn quit may decide whether or not they land on the final roster.

    • I'm salty every time I see someones mid picks become stars while we throw first and second rounders over and over and they all stink outside of Tet (who still has a lot to prove, imo)
    • There is a contingent that is total Bryce but they weathervane with the wind. When the good Bryce wind blows about once or twice a month we hear a lot from them. But they are always pro Bryce, they just don’t pipe up too much when he sucks. I can’t speak for them, as far as what they are looking at.    In a second contingent, the collective mind is made up. He has had had basically three years worth of starts that might include a top tier outing or two, a few second tier outings, offset by about the same number of bottom tier outings which actually may have the edge there.  The rest of his stuff is third tier and that is going to be the bulk of his starts. We want to move on. And we aren’t getting off of that hill until he puts us off of it. He has not.    There is a third contingent that has no conviction and definitely weather vanes. Bryce is good. Bryce isn’t good. Depending on the latest game. They will buy into 7 on 7 success so that should tell you something.
    • Nacua is really fuging good. He might be a better version of Cooper Kupp.
