Captain over Martin?

From this article about Marshall:

Now he’s learning from the guys behind him. Marshall said he discovered on film that when they’re playing the Cover-2 defense, rookie Captain Munnerlyn(notes) slides his feet better than him. Marshall has been working on perfecting that since.

“And he’s third on the depth chart right now,” Marshall said. “I watch everybody and see what I can pick up from their games to make myself better.”

I've actually been thinking about this a lot. We've heard a lot about Captain in camp, but I don't know that I've heard anything about Martin. I said yesterday that I wouldn't be surprised if Captain got the nickelback position over Martin.

i know what you mean. i think it mostly has to do with Captain having an interesting back story and not to mention he's a local favorite. in the end there's a reason martin was drafted in the 2d... i still think captain is going to be put on the practice squad with Gamble, Marshall, Martin, CJ, and Dante making the active day roster.

I think it all comes down to tackling. The nickle isn't a cover intensive position; they're only going against 3rd string wideouts. On the other hand, they are a lot closer to the runner at the start of the play. Plus our nickle will have to make his money on special teams. Marshall did well at nickle because he was a solid tackler.

Tackling is one area of Captain's game I have no idea about, and won't really know about until the preseason. If he tackles better than Martin or CJ, or if he fills in better on special teams than Wesley, he can snag that spot. I hope he does, because if he goes on the practice squad, he will never be heard from again; he'll just fade into anonymity. And personally, I think Captain can be groomed to be a starter some day.

Wasn't there something mentioned earlier in the offseason about Marshall sliding over to the Nickel when in the Nickel package since he plays it so well? That would leave whoever is the "nickel" back playing a more traditional CB position on the outside

I'm wondering if he means third behind him on that side of the field, whereas Martin might be the backup behind Gamble.

That would make sense since they should both be behind Wilson and Wesley to start out camp, making them both third string.

This is going to be an interesting matchup that I'm looking forward to seeing in preseason. But like it was already said in this forum, Martin was drafted in the 2nd round, and Cap in the 7th.

I hate to be "that guy" who says the same crap in these situations, so I'll just give you the highlights:

blah blah blah Tom Brady...blah blah blah Ryan Leaf blah blah

Cornerback

Date of birth: April 10, 1988 (1988-04-10) (age 21)

Place of birth: Mobile, AL

Height: 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m) Weight: 185 lb (84 kg)

Reminds me of Tyrone Poole.

He was a good corner for us but his height became of concern later in his tenure. Later he takes a viscous stiff arm from Steve Smith in the Super Bowl and pretty much gets burnt by him the whole game. Funny thing is with Smitty it seems like it wouldn't matter if he was 6'5".

Captain better watch out in TC Smitty is a gia...err...killer on the field.

    • So, based off the official depth chart, there are a few things I dont like on defense. Bobby Brown III as the backup, with Robinson starting over him,  and our smallest DL starting at NT. I dont like that neither of our 2nd rounder OLBs are starting, so I am hoping for heavy rotation there. Also, David Moore is our punt returner, WTF? Also, our primary backup RB as the KR when we have other capable players like Horn Jr and Trevor?  OFFENSE: WR: *Tetairoa McMillan* - Jalen Coker - *Jimmy Horn Jr.* TE: Tommy Tremble - #James Mitchell# LT: Ikem Ekwonu - Brady Christensen  LG: Damien Lewis - Chandler Zavala C - Austin Corbett - Cade Mays RG: Robert Hunt  RT: Taylor Moton - Yosh Nijman TE: Ja`Tavion Sanders - *Mitchell Evans* WR: Xavier Legette - Adam Thielen - David Moore - #Brycen Tremayne# QB: Bryce Young - Andy Dalton RB: Chuba Hubbard - #Rico Dowdle# - *Trevor Etienne* DEFENSE: LE: A`Shawn Robinson - #Bobby Brown III#  NT: #Tershawn Wharton# - *Cam Jackson* RE: Derrick Brown - Jaden Crumedy LOLB: #Patrick Jones II# - *Nic Scourton* - Thomas Incoom LILB: Trevin Wallace - (Bam Martin-Scott)  RILB: #Christian Rozeboom# - Claudin Cherrelus  ROLB: D.J. • A couple of these guys might take exception to that, but yea, I get what you’re saying.
