Gil Brandt names six teams that could 'take a step back' this season

tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't repeat as division champs, but I think we should still make the playoffs, one way or another.  The core strengths of this team are still in tact.  I think Mitchell was our biggest loss, but I'm hopeful other upgrades will pick up that "slack."

Take a look at last year's Ravens.

Different situation from the Seahawks though. The Ravens lost Ray Lewis, other key contributors on D, and traded away their #1 WR.

Seattle's core is very much still intact.

Only way Carolina takes a step back is if Cam Newton regresses.  The defense will be good, everyone already knows that.  It's all about the offense.  Tolbert said when he was interviewed about Cam on NFL.com's top 100 players was all about how Cam had taken more control of the offense.  He specifically mentioned how he audibled to a run play at Miami that netted a huge gain on the comeback drive that won the game.

Cam is already the most physically talented QB in the history of the NFL...once he starts to really figure it out...how can the Panthers be stopped?  The ankle might hold him back a LITTLE, but seems like a 25 year old guy with immense physical gifts like his can heal pretty quickly.

It's very possible.

I've seen some of the best QBs in the NFL nullified by poor line play.  And yes, mobile QBs too.

Keep in mind some of the people you're addressing likely have no idea who Tom Landry and Tex Schramm are either

Some of these kids on here judge the quality of an NFL writer not by his career, credentials or qualifications, but by whether or not he says good things about us.

Heck, I remember people talking about how great Brandt was when he was talking up Cam Newton in the draft, and then later on when he had a negative comment some of the same people talking like he was some know nothing they'd never heard of

Believe it or not, it actually is possible to have a negative opinion about the Panthers and still be a good writer.

It's wild.........  The Panthers,  according to most "experts"  will finish third or fourth in the division.......  while the Falcons finish 2nd,  with at least 10 wins.   Those guys enter the season with way more question marks than we do.

I look at it as more of an insult to the Gman than an insult to our team in general.  What the experts are implying is almost every player he signed via FA or through the draft,  will fail to contribute really anything to the team.   While the guys that Thomas Dickinmouth drafted and signed through fa,  will all pan out and make large contributions.

We will have a far easer schedule this year than last. I feel the biggest concern is injuries and our tackles. If I was a glass half full guy I would say we are no worse than last year with a much less competitive schedule.

how many times must it be said  a much less experienced and mature cam newton came into the league with a less reliable group of receivers he had no chemistry with and who he did not get to work with until training camp and still was able to break most rookie QB records?

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
