Kick Returner/Punt Returner

I have a feeling that the guy that ends up handling these duties this year is not currently on the roster. Considering it a win because your returner cleanly caught a kick or punt is like taking your kid to Chuck E. Cheese for passing their grade with all Ds.

Pilares ran into the invisible brick wall at around the 15 repeatedly, as expected, and Barner was getting dropped immediately upon catching punts. I had great hope for Barner when we drafted him, not only as a RB, but also for his return abilities. He has yet to show that explosiveness he displayed in college. I haven't lost hope for Barner, but he's got to step it up.

That being said, I just don't see that explosive/game changing-type player out of the players currently competing for the return duties, and that's pretty disappointing.

A viable return guy should look decisive and as though he is operating at another speed compared to everyone else on the field. It is really even more of a glaring problem as I watch other games and almost every team I have watched thus far, have had a guy that fits that exact description. Just in this Browns/Lions game alone, there are multiple, non-big name guys, that fit that explosive, decisive returner mold.

I feel this issue has to be addressed, otherwise, any wins we have will be in spite of the return game - it's that big of a problem.

We don't need a spot for a returner.  Look at the stats below from teamrankings dot com/nfl/stat/kickoff-touchback-pct.  Pilares and Barner are both capable of catching kickoffs.  I was actually impressed with Pilares last night.   NFL Team Kickoff Touchback Percentage Date: 2/2 cal_16.png

Seasons : 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013

Rank Team 2013 Last 3 Last 1 Home Away 2012 1 Carolina 77.65% 90.91% 100.00% 81.63% 72.22%

48.05%

Excuse my newness to the board. The stats above show Carolina took a touchback 77.65% of the time and 90.91% in the last 3 games. My point is, why bring in a guy to do just that when you already have capable people who know the system.

Kick returner is almost obsolete but punt returning is a different story.

Forgive me for not being clear on my concern, as I know the title lists both KR/PR, but my point is, we need someone who is a skilled RETURN man, regardless of whether it is kicks or punts.

People need to go ahead and get over the fact that Pilares is not going to pan out as a receiver and offers nothing as a returner.  I'm just here to enlighten you past your inevitable denial, anger, bargaining, and soon depression so you can finally reach acceptance with grace and style.

but seriously, if anything was proven by the stats, it's that they can get Cason, or any number of quality fair catching players, to fair catch the ball and save roster spots.

    • Yes message boards will always include that sort of stuff… However, this place has been a cess pool since the team took Bryce Young over CJ Stroud. It becomes a problem when it is accepted and promoted, which it has been here (even by at least one mod). Many posters sole purpose on this board is to try to dunk on others for having different opinions. We just had one write a novella on how talking about Bryce Young’s game winning drives “needs to stop”…after a win. They don’t want real conversation. It “needs to stop”. There are many posters here who literally only show up after losses to dead thread and try to dunk on others about the QB (MRenshaw is an easy example). I really don’t see much of that happening the other way around. There’s too many people that would rather the team be bad so they can feel justified for constant doom and gloom and negative opinions. It’s been pointed out by many over the past couple years. This just isn’t a place to have football discussions anymore because of the constant hyperbole. If you don’t subscribe to “Bryce Young is the worst QB ever who can’t throw the ball further than 5 yards and is the reason why we lose any game we lose and doesn’t help in any game we win”, then you are labeled a Bryce Young Stan.
    • if you believe he is watching every NFL game.....every week.....go right ahead.  I get it, he said something you like.  But that's like believing the talking heads on the ESPN shows are watching all the games.  You think Stephen A is watching the Panthers every Sunday too?  If Stephen A needs to go on First Take he certainly can pretend like he has watched every snap any player on the roster has taken lol.   No one is that isn't a Panther fan has been watching the 9-25 career go down every Sunday.  Or even a lot of Sunday's.  You know who knows more about Bryce Young than Long? The collective huddle.  What they are reviewing is stat sheets, highlights and in summaries.  It's an old formula lol.
