The Cam Newton Conspiracy Theory

Anybodyhome

Recommended Posts

There have been plenty of these threads in the Tinderbox lately, why not introduce one to the Panther forum?

The Panthers need to negotiate a new contract for Cam Newton soon. How different are those negotiations if the team is 6-10 versus 10-6? And how is it not beyond the realm of possibility the Panthers purposefully set the team up for another substandard season in an effort to save some money?

Scoff, laugh and guffaw as you may, but the precedent has been set (Jerry Richardson leading the owner lockout while claiming he didn't have 2 nickels to rub together and the subsequent horrendous roster and season result).

Granted, one may have to bring out the inner-most cynical self to consider the possibility, but I personally don't think it's that far-fetched to believe. And I can't wait to see how many blind faith fans will tell me this is a complete and utter impossibility although there is another professional sports league where this kind of thing is rather commonplace and accepted (NBA).

They are gonna have to pay him just as much for what he did in 11 and 12 as 13. Regardless of our record he will carry us again.

Crap talent around him won't change the fact everyone knows with a complete team around him this is a playoff team. FO wouldn't get away with a discount for a sabotage..

Coming off being division champ, 12-4, and with no sure fire option to replace Gross I can't say that the OL situation is a garbage attempt.

Releasing Smitty and rolling the dice with Benjamin doesn't sound like tanking either.

If anything, the steps being taken overall seem to point towards clearing money to afford Cam's big payday

I still would like to know if we sign Cam to a mega deal, where we will get the money to sign Keek the following year to a mega deal, then sign Star the following year to a mega deal and if KB is great, then he will get a mega deal as well.

I know hitting on all your first round draft picks for 3 or 4 consecutive years is amazing and a great problem to have but what happens when it comes time to pay them all mega deals they will command when their rookie contracts expires and Cam's contract is north of a 100 mill

The good thing about those other positions, their "mega deals" aren't the same as the huge deals QBs get. Kuechly could get a 5/70m contract, and it be the largest ever given to a MLB.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
