I'm not trying to be a ****, but I hate it when people bring up the PFF "grades".

They are so useless. PFF does a lot of cool things with advanced stats and things like that. But they don't know play calls and responsibilities. Often a o-line is expecting help or someone else has the responsibility and the wrong guy gets penalized. It happens on both sides of the ball, and they are fun for fans they shouldn't be taken as gospel.

But fug it, they are fun so why should I care. Just weird pet peave of mine

I figured this would be brought up, that's why I said to take it with a grain of salt. Also, PFF is always scoffed at when they give bad scores, but lauded when they give players good scores.

The point wasn't his grade, it was his grade in relation to every other Tackle that was graded on the same scale (almost dead last)

Yeah I know. Ignore me

Although their same scale says Luke is overrated in relation to other linebackers.

I see your point. I agree that Bell is an average LT, and that we do not have the cap space to grab a top tier LT. That should certainly be a factor in this discussion.

My point, not addressed directly to you since you seem not to be on the hate-Bell-bandwagon, is that while Gettleman and Rivera are aware of the limits of Bell, they see enough in him to promote him to one of the most important positions in the league.

I guess my argument rested on Bell being the best available player for the position, according to Gettleman and Rivera. Which I think you agree with to an extent. He may not be a top tier LT, but he is better than all the other available options, again according to the decisions made by the Front Office.

I am only saying that if both Gettleman and Rivera have enough faith in him, and the team supports him, why are fans cursing him out, while hailing Gettleman for his abilities to see potential talent at other positions?

Here's some perspective for people to consider:  while I don't care much for Bell's play, it is an astonishing story for an undrafted tackle to become an average starter in the biggest football league in the world.  I don't think he'll ever get above that level, but that kind of improvement for someone with his background is rather impressive.

That said, I fully expect he'll be replaced as soon as we find a better option.

    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
