The Panthers D has given up 136 points over their past 4 games, most in franchise history

What do you make of that stat? The defense was never that bad in early 1995 or 2001 or 2010, but yet we've managed to go 1-2-1 over those 4 games due to Cam. We had arguably our best defense in team history last year, but now we're a Luke Kuechly injury away from having arguably our worst ever. Is the talent drop-off between Hardy and Addison and Mike Mitchell and DeCoud really THAT dramatic?

Yes, Gettleman built this year's defense around a solid pass rush, but did he never once stop to think what would happen if Hardy went down early in the season? Never thought about acquiring someone in the secondary with even MEDIOCRE coverage skills?

Mike Mitchell and DeCloud is a pretty big drop off athletic wise, which is a reason our over aggressive front 7 is getting burned now. The back 4 doesn't have the speed to cover up the aggressiveness up front, so if someone tries to be a hero and make a big play and it backfires there's no one to save the day. Hence all the long runs given up this season. "4 rushes over 50 yards given up in 6 games" Also doesn't hurt that we were a bit faster and more athletic at the other safety position as well most of last season as well.

Runs over 20 given up through 6 games -

Bucs - 54 yard run
Steelers - 50 yard run
Steelers - 81 yard run
Ravens - 21 yard run
Ravens - 23 yard run
Bengals - 89 yard run
Bengals - 20 yard run

Also another two long runs in Steelers game that went for "17 and 19 yards"

The more troubling statistic is the redzone defense percentage. Defense is allowing touchdowns on over 80% of opposing teams trips into the redzone, so the defense is no longer bending and not breaking like last season.....it's completely breaking all the way down and then giving up 6 points where last year a bunch of those redzone trips ended up in 3 or none.

The defense stinks this year aside of the occasional turnover they provide every now and then.

Hand the keys of the kingdom to Cam.  He is an elite, clutch playmaker capable of winning games on his own.  I wish we could support him in every facet that he deserves to benefit from, but everyone around him is failing at the moment.  With the way our defense, special teams and run game are playing, our best bet (despite how unfair it is) is to put everything on Cam's shoulders.  He's a tough man with an undeniable desire to win games.  We are most likely on the verge of making him the highest paid athlete in the NFL (and with good reason).  Lets see everything and anything he can do to salvage this wreck of a team.

All we need to do is win this crappy division to have a chance,

Small sample size? 4 games is a quarter of the season...

And five weeks into the season last year we were 1-3 after getting pasted by the Cardinals coming off a bye week.

Yes, the defense gives up way too many big plays and doesn't generate the suffocating pressure on every snap that we saw from last season, but they are creating turnovers at opportune times: Cason with a near pick six today when the Bengals had all the momentum and two turnovers to help ice the Bears game last week are the most recent examples.

You also have to account for the fact that these aren't exactly slouches on offense the Panthers are facing having to go outside of the division in the early part of the schedule.

Detroit and Chicago have tremendous targets on the outside and pass catchers out of the backfield. Cincy has a stalwart offensive line and even without their two best threats in the passing game is still loaded with depth offensively and a quarterback that rarely gets sacked. A rejuvenated Steve Smith has Flacco playing at a championship level again.

The defense bailed out many a poor offensive performance last season. The offense is simply returning the favor this year.

No, it won't get any easier with GB and Seattle on the horizon, but come time for the division slate, I think we will see much better performances against teams we are more familiar with and probably more talented than right now.

You see cause for concern, but I see a defense that is still in first place in the division while playing a gauntlet and playing its worst defense of the season. As long as the rest of the division keeps underperforming and Cam keeps looking like his 2011 self, just keep the faith. Marathon, not a sprint.

I'm sorry but that response is not going to work, especially when you compared it to every four game stretch the panthers have ever had beforehand. The implication based on this statistical revelation is that the panthers defense is the worst it's ever been (it's been worse) and that it's only going to get worse (it's not). If you'd simply said, "the panthers D has sucked ass the past month", I'd probably agree with you in spades.
