Question about Godfrey

ThinkAboutIt

Recommended Posts

At this stage in his career, is Roman Harper a much better Safety than Godfrey could've been to the point that they would release Godfrey because he couldn't play Corner instead of releasing Harper and moving Godfrey to Safety?

Would you have rather seen Godfrey released, or Harper released and Godfrey moved to Safety?

I'm not sure how much Rivera and Gettleman thought this through, lol.

You've basically punished Godfrey because you decided to play him out of position. I wouldn't be surprised to see Harper get cut after sucking another few weeks, and seeing them bring Godfrey back at Safety if he's still available. Bringing people back seems to be what they do best.

Wait, so Godfrey couldn't cover a small portion of the field at all so you want to see him cover an entire half of the field?

Godfrey was a below average safety before his injury. After his injury he doesn't even qualify for a look at safety. The Panthers were extremely nice to him by allowing him to try out at nickel. He should be grateful.

So your direct answer to the question is Harper is a better safety at this stage of his career than Godfrey.

Thanks.

Will say the same thing I've said elsewhere.

Harper is a different kind of safety than Godfrey was.  He's a smart, wily veteran type who's generally in the right place, knows how to read a quarterback and doesn't get fooled all that easily.  He lacks some in athleticism, but he's the kind of player who could absolutely feast on quarterback mistakes behind a high pressure defensive line.

We used to have that.  This year, not so much :(

On the flipside, Godfrey was never especially cerebral as a safety.  His athleticism was really the best thing he had going for him and that pretty much went out the window when he got injured.  Truth be told, he probably never should have been switched to safety but John Fox thought it'd work (it didn't) and Ron Rivera didn't fix the mistake until after what could have helped him be a decent corner was already taken away.

Shame, really.

Harper sucks and should be cut with no regret. People giving him credit for the same lucky INT's that Godfrey got for years and still got flack for his play.... lol

Harper definitely isn't an all pro by any stretch of the imagination.  He does seem to play well when we get pressure though, and his value at this point has been hard to access because we haven't gotten into the meat of the division games yet.  Harper could be valuable come time to play the Saints.  Harper's value comes within the games in our own division, and Decoud for that matter.  If these guys can help get us over the hump within our own division then they've earned their stay for the year.

    • If he is BPA, then yes. I am a believer in Dan at this point and hope that he doubles on his strat from last draft.  T-Mac wasnt the biggest need, but at a first round position, over-drafting for need is bad.  We had XL coming back (we didnt know he'd catch rabid Racoon Disease in the offseason and forget how to be even an acceptable WR), Thielen coming back (yes...old AF thielen was a 1k reciever) and Coker coming off a surprising season...if you asked RIGHT AT THIS SAME POINT LAST OFFSEASON if we should draft Defense or T-Mac where we were last year, I guarantee 70-80% would have said "WHY THE fug ARE WE TAKING A RECIEVER!?!?!".  We're getting close, but you build a winning roster by Drafting studs in the first round and depth after, and Studs dont come from "Well we needed a Long Snapper", they come from "I dont care if we don't need a Receiver, That dude is THE DUDE"
    • I honestly don't care about NBA talent. Our last championship team was light on it. The team that went to the title game was light on it. I wanna win college games. I haven't watched a full NBA game in probably 15 years. I barely remember one and doners, whether their ours or elsewhere. It's one of the reasons why my hatred of duke has cooled. Their players don't hang around long enough for me to even know their names.
    • Should hopefully pick up a half-game on the Sixers and Heat tonight. Also possibly the Hawks and Magic. 🐝🐝🐝
