Anonymous offensive assistant coach on Panthers D

I came across an article from Alex Marves on foxsports.com in which he discusses the defensive failures of the NFC South drawing on input from an anonymous offensive assistant coach that has played against some of the teams in our division. There's not much on the Panthers here, but what else is there to read today? ...

"Carolina's problem is they over-pursue everything and give up big plays," the assistant coach told FOX Sports. "The linebackers are over-active. Carolina stops most plays but the big plays are killing them. They are feast or famine."

Honestly, I'm not sure how accurate this assessment is. Have we "stopped most plays" recently? I guess it's sort of true with regards to our run defense, but not our passing defense. We've been giving up a lot of methodical drives too, haven't we?

That is what I have been preaching in regards to us suddenly being bad vs the run. We play solid all around against the run most of a game and then one of our stud LBs plays one run horribly and it goes for 60.

Then for some reason people talk about Hardy or Star or someone else....

Hardy has something to do with our pass D. Run D is largely our LBs screwing us not playing basic football they did all season last year. Between the tackle runs both Luke and TD have been inconstent with playing their gaps soundly and tackling

Well I can see that. Rivera keeps saying everyone just needs to do their job. Not playing gap sound defense and give up the big play. The gio run is a good example. The problem is it's not the same person every time.

Most of the huge runs it is the same issue. LBs

Also our Ts get manhandled. No idea what's up with Star and Cole has always been meh to me.

Teams are attacking us different IMO. Last year DTs had favorable scenarios and won. LBs arent winning when they should this year. Opponents aren't getting a body on our LBs.....and they should of destroyed several of those big runs....

You can attack defensive fronts in different ways. It isn't always suppose to be a DT making the stop. If an opponent is putting an emphasis at getting bodies on LBs then DTs need to make the play

The Steelers, I think, exposed us on D.  The first two games this year, the Def was a lot like last year.  Stopping the run and being ready for a 3rd down pass play.  The running plays the opposing teams called were pretty straight forward.  RB gets the ball heads straight for a hole fast.  Then we played Pitt.  Bell would be patient stay in the backfield dance around and find a hole.  They would rely on our aggressive play style and take advantage of it.  After that game, I have noticed every team has run similar run plays.  Our guys want to make a play so bad, they over pursue a lot.  As for the pass rush, I have no idea what is wrong with that.

Welcome to McDermott defense. It's an extremely aggressive (people like to use the word "swarming") defense. When it's good it's can be really good, but when it's bad it can be really bad. Big plays are going to happen if the players on the field aren't executing tackles and that is what you are seeing. It was the same way when he was in Philly and that is what got him run out of town (not saying it was McDermott's fault).

No it's not. The d-line is so bad offenses have been singling all of them and bringing up linemen or TEs to block our stud LBs. Countless times I've seen a center blocking Luke nearly out of a play and he still gets to the ball carrier first for the tackle, but instead of after 2 yards its after 10 yards. Hardy contributes hugely to that because he takes a double team so our LBs will go unblocked. And Hardy can actually beat a double team and still take a runner down. Star should be better and KK should play more because both of them need to be able to beat one blocker. But they can't. It all starts with our d-line, not the secondary, not the LBs.

McDermott in Philly didn't have the linebackers to run his scheme most of the time so they gave up lots of yards and points.  Last year our linebackers played very well and were disciplined.  This year with Blackburn hurt and Davis playing erratically you have one consistent linebacker in Kuechly.  Problem is that he is trying to do too much and often gets sucked up into the interior so teams can easily run outside and make a big play.  He is trying to make up for other guys mistakes and becomes part of the problem.  As you know this defense requires discipline and responsibility with everyone doing their job.  One missed tackle and there is a big gap.  Last year guys would swarm to the ball and keep the mistake to a few yards so there were not as many big plays.  This year one missed tackle results in a 60 yard TD because other players are not swarming to the ball and making up for mistakes or missed tackles.
