Falcons sign former Panthers DB Charles Godfrey

Yeah, he completely sucked at the nickel position but that's just it. He is not a cornerback. Period.

I would have liked to see what he offered back at his natural NFL position but alas we shall never know.

Best of luck to him...only him....as a person...not the Falcons...hate them. lol

Cornerback was his natural position.

John Fox moved him to safety when he was drafted.

lol I knew someone would say that which is why I made sure I said NFL position....but of course it still came.

I'm pretty sure he bulked up and possibly lost some of the habits that make you a good CB when he began to play safety.  I just wonder what would have happened had he got some snaps there. But I'm trusting Rivera and Co.

(as long as he's not at Corner though I'm fine, just think he couldn't be much worse than what we have at Safety)

Safety in the NFL is a more cerebral position while Corner is mostly athleticism and reflex.

Now, I wouldn't call Godfrey an utter doofus, but let's just say he wasn't a good fit for safety.

Ironically Zod posted the same thing.  I actually believe a safety is JUST THAT a safety net.  You have the ability to react to the situation later, whereas as a cornerback once you're beat off of the line you are toast.  Safety you do not have the same responsibility as soon as the snap begins.

*I could be wrong I actually have not ever played in a Pro football game believe it or not lol

For a corner in the NFL, it's mostly either "cover that guy" or "cover your zone".  They occasionally do some reading, usually of the route their man is running, but for the most part they're straight cover guys (Chris Gamble, for example).

Safeties actually have to do some reading, and a really smart guy like Earl Thomas or Troy Polamolu can learn a quarterback's tendencies and use them against him.

Safety vs QB is often referred to as a chess match, whereas corner vs receiver is more often just a straight athletic matchup.

    • I do believe that Evero gets canned before the end of the season and Capers takes over the D. I think the stage is set for Evero to fall on the sword for a 4-7 win season.  Not saying it would be a set up but I do think if that transpires, the seat under DC might start getting pretty warm, rightly or wrongly. That's my read on Tepper. I am not at all excited nor am I dreading anything. I just have extremely low expectations so I am just waiting to see what this revision of the roster looks like.  I FEEL like we are better on paper than last season's team but I wouldn't be remotely shocked if we were as bad or worse. Again, I do think this is the 2nd worst roster in franchise history overall. What will really make me happy is for some of the big questions to finally be answered(Bryce, Ikey, Horn, etc). I would like to see a real expansion of our core player pool(basically just D. Brown currently). I want to see a couple of hits in free agency and a couple in the draft. If we accomplish those things, I have faith that we are at least moving in the right direction after many, many years doing the opposite.
    • Considering our depth. Certainly kick the tires.
    • I am not so sure about that. I don't know that he is so soley offensively focused as winning focused. But, not really in a productive way. I get the impression he wants to be like Robert Kraft and take credit for "taking a risk on Bill Belichick" and being successful.  His track record indicates that in the NFL and in his business life.
