Has Ron gotten complacent with his new contract?

I would say yes. We all noticed last year when his ass was on fire that he pulled out all stops and became much more animated on the sidelines. He actually looked like a head coach and I as a fan started to believe in him.

Now that he got an extension, what does he do? Go back to being stoic Ron. Hold a joke of a training camp. Blame everything on execution instead of poor coaching. Act like a clueless numbnut about most things. (I can't decide whether he was trolling or serious about Cam last night). Do the same thing and expect different results.

I for one can tell he has lost the locker room. Even with guys such as Haruki Nakamura or Sherrod Martin playing, we were always close in games up to this year. I have never in my 12 years as a fan of this team seen them this bad.

Right because he didn't go for it on 4th down last night right?? Maybe he is right when he says they are doing the best they can.  He might know something from all his years in the league which is that talent is a bigger factor than people want to admit and we don't have nearly enough talent at key positions.

Rivera and the Panthers in general have played their best with their backs against the wall.  at 1-3 last year they rallied to win 11 out of 12 of their final games.  Rivera looked sure to be fired after the season with another losing record.  This season his seat hasn't gotten hot enough yet because he thinks he's safe for another season with his contract extension.  Too bad he's not in his last year.

I don't call it "their backs against the wall".

It's actually the opposite. It's when no one expects The Panthers to do well, is when Rivera does.

However, when there's pressure on the team (2012, after Cam's rookie season, 2014 following a playoff berth, and in big, late night games), Rivera Shats the Farm.

He won't coach well, cause the seats hot enough. He'll coach well, when there's no more expectation on the team, and Rivera can coach free. However, when there's pressure or expectations on the team, Rivera can't handle it.

I mean the pressure was on when the team was 1-3 last year.  There was talk of him being fired mid-season.  There were rumors the team was already scouting potential replacements.  Then the team completely dominated the rest of the season.

But, the team has officially quit on Rivera so I see no hope of them turning it around this year.

I got you. Know what you mean. And its' kinda complicated, yes.

Nonetheless, it appears when people give up on the team (Ron playing well after poor starts for example), is when Rivera usually does his best. To you, his job may be on the line. But to Rivera, the Panthers are no longer in contention.

Now when people place expectations on the team and the playoffs are discussed, and/or there's a spotlight on the team (after a good year; good record, National/Night games, accolades, etc., Rivera repeatedly Shats The farm.

This team just can't seem to handle success, the spotlight, or accolades (no matter how brief).

Thank about it?

PS To Hepcat: Remember in 2011 and 2012, after poor starts, Rivera was in no harm of losing his job being a new coach with "on the job training (boy, what a crock to hire a new coach into), thus there was no pressure when he made those late season comebacks. Remember, the Panthers still had no shot of making the playoffs, and didn't. So those games really didn't amount to much regarding the race.

During 2013, it was early enough in the season. And yes, there was talk of Rivera being canned, and he responded accordingly indeed. However, I think his contract status may have had something to do with that as well. He was truly desperate this time. So he became a little more aggressive, and he was fortunate to have good health and free agent moves.

Now, that he has a new contract, notice he's back to his old ways. And as soon as the Panthers and Cam had a little success this year (along with injuries), the Panthers changed their offensive philosophy. Why? So the offense became putrid, while Ron's beloved defense was awful to begin with. And last night (another National Horror Show), neither were any good.

I will give you, the Hurney firing may have helped motivate Ron. However, do you really want a Head Coach that needs to be threatened every time he starts to coach at an adequate (not even good to great) NFL level?? :startle:

That's a problem right there.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
