NFL suspends Adrian Peterson for remainder of season

Hardy is smart. From a financial standpoint, playing under the tag for $13.4MM this year, it would be ludicrous for him to have accepted a six game no-pay suspension.

Now when he leaves as a free agent, he can sign a contract that is structured in such a way that he is only making say $7.5MM in the first year, so when Goodell suspends him for six games the financial burden will only be half of what it would have been this year.

Brilliant.

I can bet you that a grievance will be file and AP will be playing next week. Watch

You could be right on that.  If Goodell doesn't feel like Peterson sitting out for 9 games is a real suspension period because he got paid, he should fine him those game checks.  A reasonable arbitrator would probably take that into account, and fine him the game checks.

If Hardy is found innocent none of this will matter and the Panthers will lose a star DE. At the end of the day this hasn't even been settled in court so anything can happen.

with this approach. What is stopping someone from just making up allegations to the Super BOwl QB before the game? Say a woman says X QB hits her and has physical evidence of abuse.. How will they not take action?

That is my issue with this type of process. What would stop a woman for being vindictive and falsely accuse a player for something they didn't do? They would automatically be cut/banned/not allowed to play? That is really unfair especially if it comes out in the end that they are innocent. That one phrase comes to mind now though, a few and ruin it for a lot of people.  I guess that is true in this case. I thought the law was innocent into proven guilty. I think the NFLPA will step up soon.

Goodell is screwing up bc he is setting all sorts of precedents as he makes stuff as he has thrown out the old policies. There are no longer any rules to go by which is comical. Every case now is just a made up punishment on the fly.

Infinitely different. No player is that important to the league.

The NFL has done an outstanding job in creating a team first image but we know that this league, much like any league, are star driven leagues.

The reason that the NFL has instituted fines for not wearing socks, face masks, gloves, etc that are not in line with the rest of the team is that when a player goes down, another player who wears the same exact uniform can go in and replace them. The average neutral fan wouldn't know the difference if Josh Norman was replaced by James Dockery. This gives the illusion that the team is not handicapped by their star players going down.  However, we are not stupid and know know that player a is not player b and know who the superstars in this league are.

In short, the superstars are very much important to the league for the mere fact that fines are instituted against them for basically getting hurt.

On the other hand, Goodell is turning the NFL front office into a spectacle. I'm sure there are owners that are pissed that he is making the Commissioner's position turn into a joke. I know TLDR, but players, especially superstars are bigger than the commissioner, especially when the commissioner is out of control.

Curious if he has any recourse under the CBA. I know there are some double jeopardy clauses but I guess Goodell will argue that the exempt list is not a punishment.

Players gave all the punishment power to Goodell in the CBA. They don't have any legs to stand on.

Also, the NFLPA is pretty inept. They advised Peterson to not attend a meeting with Goodell (Why? I don't know) which probably had more than a little to do with him getting shafted.

Good. I assumed he would be back for the Carolina game with how things were playing out this year against us.

Game still falls after a bye week, though :(

At this point, I think Goodell would argue that the sky is green if he thought it could help the NFL fix their image problems.

I get what you're saying, but technically if he were smart he'd never have been in this position to begin with.

As a fan of the Panthers, I hope to come see the team win against whoever the opponent is.

As a fan of the NFL, I come to see Adrian Peterson play, not McKinnon or Asiata.

Was AP not on the exempt list with pay?  Also, he plead guilty to a crime.  By that simple fact, the NFL probably can do whatever it wants.

1. The Commissioner's Exempt List does nothing but punish the team as long as the player is getting paid, but not allowed on the field.

2. His guilty plea was arranged with the State of Texas and, although the charges stemmed from a child abuse accusation, there is no mention of child abuse in the guilty verdict, although the league specifically cited child abuse as a reason for his suspension.

3. The suspension today means that Peterson, who was fined $4k as part of his guilty plea, is essentially being fined $4M by the league as this is his salary loss for the remainder of the season. Just a little disparity?

In summary, the league is:

* Punishing the team, not the player by allowing him to get paid not to play.

* Punishing the player again after the player has been punished by the court system.

* Making poo up as it plays out.

Yeah even I no longer think Hardy will ever be seen in a Panthers uniform again. New Hardy threads are pointless until he's found not guilty or there's a hung jury.

He should sign a one year deal with us for free! We all know that won't happen, but he should.

Meh, doesn't even matter at this point

    • Nothing wrong with starting to look for bodies early. It's a long injury filled season. I doubt we get through unscathed.
    • We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.
    • I would also add that I think it's more than money.  AT has looked absolutely miserable out there at times, and there was a lot of speculation he would demand to be traded.  Personally, I thought he was a lock to be moved last year.  Maybe his hamstring is the only thing that prevents that from happening. The fact that he's not only willing to come back and play, but excited about it, really bodes well for Bryce.  AT is a veteran and he knows the game.  If he didn't have confidence in Bryce, I guarantee you he wouldn't be in a Panther uniform this year.  I'll take that as a positive.
