Will Josh Norman command a big contract next offseason?

The 2016 offseason is shaping up to be a critical one for the Panthers.  The short list of key players whose contracts are up next year:

Cam Newton

Luke Kuechly

Greg Olsen

Thomas Davis

Mike Tolbert

Josh Norman

It's no secret the Panthers will extend Newton and Kuechly, but from there it gets interesting.  The Panthers might try to re-sign Olsen to a team-friendly contract.  Thomas Davis will be 33 by this point.  Mike Tolbert has been a key player on special teams and in short yardage situations...do they keep him?

That brings me to Josh Norman.  If he plays at the level he did the past 2nd half of the season, he could be in line for a massive contract.  With a lot of money tied up in the extensions of Kuechly and Newton, will they have the funds?  Norman's emergence has helped solidify the defense.  Russell Wilson didn't throw many times Norman's way in the playoff game against Seattle.  We will see.

Norman's age is going to work against him as well as his history.

Norman is going to be 28 going into next season.  Though he doesn't have a lot of miles on his tires, age catches us all.  Remember Terrence Newman of the cowboys.  He was an older guy as well, and he never performed up to the expectations of his mega contract because of age.

Norman has been healthy, and he's gotten better, but he's not going to demand a mega contract.  Something reasonable should keep him here.  Also, while he's played well, he has a history of really bad mistakes and miscues....

Maybe not from the Panthers...but Norman shut down Julio Jones twice this season, a player who has burned the Panthers many times.  While Carolina might not want to throw big dollars at him, some other team desperate for talent at corner might.  28 is a prime age for a cornerback.

Correlation does not equal causation. Be cautious, the slope is a slick one.

We should sign Norman this offseason. Cam and Luke will get big contracts either way. TD and Olsen's price tag won't be going up any, and they'll probably end up re-signing on more team friendly deals. Tolbert's a fullback, and getting older, he won't get much. Norman is really the only one who will make himself a lot of money depending on what he does this coming season.

It's in Norman's best interest to wait until next season to sign anything.  If he puts up a full season of what he did at the end of 2014, he'll get a huge contract somewhere, and probably not Carolina.

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
